Leather seats?

    Hi guys!

Just picked up my 2010 Prius II yesterday. I got it in black, with tint and xm radio, with (I THINK) ash gray interior. It's dark gray. It was the only black Prius on the lot, and I'm happy with it. They only came $250 off the price of the Prius. I came from a SUV that got 12 mpg (and was on the verge of dying) so I'm already loving it. :)

Anyway! The one thing I don't like is the cloth seats. I figured it would be easy to get aftermarket leather seats since the new Prius is so damned popular. Does anyone have any leads for them?

I've only found one seller on eBay that has them (for $450), and they didn't have any actual photos of the leather seats, so I wasn't sure if they had the dark gray or the light gray color in stock. Also it seems Katskinz has them, but they are a bit expensive (especially when, by searching, I saw that a lot of the gen II people got leather kits for $150!)

Also, my seats are the dark gray color. The interior is a mix of dark and light grays. I was wondering if you thought light gray leather seats would look good in the car.

    Really love the Prius!

    Thanks for any advice

I would try this website and see what you may think. precisionfit.com seems to have some nice leather covers that look nice. Hope you find what your looking for.

Prices seem to be quite good as well.

    Best of Luck!

Years ago I had a beautiful 280ZX. A friend of mine picked it up at a car auction for me. The front driver's leather seat had damage to it so he sent it out to be re-covered for me. I'm not sure if he used a specialized body shop or not but it came out great. My dealer also told me that they can upgrade from cloth to leather. Perhaps they can give you info on the local businesses they use for this.

As one of the people who bought the Bartlett kit for $150, it really wasn't a "lot" of us that got that deal. Bartlett was moving their warehouse to another state and were overstocked on Gen II kits (with the Gen III coming out, which has a totally different interior which the Gen II leather wouldn't fit on). They offered their kit for, if I remember, $350 or offer. The offers got lower and lower up until they pulled the adds with their move (I believe I was the last, and mine was actually shipped from their new location).

Anyway, that was a one-time good deal which I lucked into (as did others) because we read this forum and someone spotted the add and was kind enough to share it here (see why you should read PC? :D ). Don't expect that kind of pricing again, especially for the new Gen III.

As for Katskinz, that's what I would have went with had I paid full price. They have many options (perforated or not, 2-tone, contrasting piping, etc) and are great quality from everything I've read. I'd be careful of getting the cheaper kits unless they are a known product. I've seen kits that weren't even lined.

Finally, you might surf the net and check Ebay for salvage yard seats. Unfortunately Prius get hit just like anything else, and you can often pick up the front buckets and rear seat complete cheaper than the kit and installation (or even the kit, possibly).

    Hi guys,

Thank you for the information. I think I like the Katskinz option. I was browsing the site and they had a picture of a two-tone grey with some eco package logo on the seat. I think I'd like to get two-tone with one of the greys light and the other dark. Do you think this would look nice?

I've included some photos from their website (I believe this is a gen 2 seat)

Whether you like Katskinz or some other product, the absolute most important factor is the skill of the installer. There are far too many out there who call themseves upholsterers, but who never even knew what that word meant until last week. So be careful about who you choose. Ask for customer references.

I think that would look good - I happen to like 2-tone leather. The Eco labels would be unique.

As someone who did his own install, I have to agree. don't tackle one unless you are relatively adventurous and have some mechanical ability. Even then it's a physically tough job, amazingly. Finding a good shop that sells the Katskinz installed for a turn-key price is the best approach. I believe they can provide info for your area on installers.

Keep us updated, I have the same car as you. Black II with gray interior. What color floor mats do you have? I'm still deciding what color to get, dark gray or black.

Anyone thinking about wrapping the steering wheel in leather?

Hi guys, a small update. I'm most likely going with the Katskinz interior. Just like the picture above. It will be two tone gray, with the "inserts" (the middle or whatever) perforated. I'm up in the air about the eco logo. If it's not ridiculously expensive I'll probably go with it.

I went by my favorite upholstery shop today but they are closed until Monday. I want to ask if they can order Katskinz directly or if I need to get the seat covers myself and then have them install them.

Kawita, I will take a photo of my interior with the floor mats in just a few minutes so you can have some help making a choice (my dealer already had installed the $600 floormat option - LOL - so I didn't have a choice.)

What's in the eco-leather? Or are they just badges?

Here is the photo of the gray floor mats. I think you should definitely go with dark gray.

    -

When I look around my interior I see the bottom half of the interior is basically dark gray and the top half is light gray. I really think some two-tone light/dark gray leather seats (or just plain light gray leather seats) would look incredibly great in the Prius.

Be very, very careful of cheap leather covers. You have side airbags, and if they are not stitched properly the airbags could fail to deploy to save you. Katskin has this stuff down pat, I would not buy seat covers from some schmo off ebay. Safety is important to me, not sure about anyone else.

I have gotten two quotes to install leather. One uses Katzskin and the other does not, but both priced installed at $1,300. Both places do a ton of work for dealerships as well as custom work. Just FYI.

No, no, no! The cows are new Eco Friendly, renewable resource cows. They're bio-engineered with snake genes to shed their skin, then re-grow it every year. That way we can use the leather without having to destroy the cow, and get a new supply yearly. It works great, except you have to avoid those poisonous fangs. And the cows now say Moosssssssss, Moossssssss and their tail rattles...

Does anybody have any recommedations for an aftermarket leather installer in the Northwest Chicago area?

Also, I have the Misty Gray interior, but am not happy with how light it is. I really wich I had gotten the dark gray. Will getting dark gray seats with the rest being Misty Gray look funny?
