    Hello Everyone,

There is so much to learn here. I've been reading and searching old threads for a month now. I'm about to buy a new Prius Gen III, finally. I live in Boston Metro area. August was hectic because C4C. Fortunately my current car is worth about the same as C4C price, maybe just a bit less.

    Couple of questions:

Why can't I find Blizzard White anymore? It's not even showing up on Toyota website. Maybe it's just me. [Edit: It was just me. Probably not in stock because they are extra popular.]

I'm thinking of getting a Prius III. I was so excited about the Solar panel, but my wife talked me down. She said it's going to be useful for me maybe 1 day a year. Well. If it was up to me I would get a V, but I just can't imagine convincing my wife.

About the price. So, I'm going to be probably paying a MSRP, right? Am I an idiot for doing that? I was thinking maybe if I wait until February, I'll get a few hundred dollars below MSRP. But then again, I'll still be driving my current car.

I love my iPhone. I wonder if it's worth it to get the USB integration package. Is it only available if it's installed at the factory? Or can the dealer do it? Or do I even need it? Looks like the Bluetooth integration might be enough. iPhone is probably the main reason I'm probably not getting a Navigation package.

So, I learned here to avoid dealers who do Toyoguard. I haven't found one who offered it to me yet.

I also learned not to get extended warranty from the dealer, and get it from here. I never had an extended warranty. Should I get one?

I also learned about the Bladder in the gas tank, and being careful about running out of gas. [Edit: 2010 Models do not have the bladder problem. Thanks bluemonday and Tideland for clearing that up.]

I also learned here that the general consensus is that Prius drives pretty well in snowy condition. Just be careful about low clearance, and get a snow tire if I really want one.

Since the price is going to be pretty much the same everywhere, should I go to the dealer closest to home, or somewhere a bit farther? I've been to 3 dealerships so far. Shopping for a car is not too fun. Does anybody have recommendations for Boston area dealership?

Should I do the oil change at the dealership or at the Jiffy Lube?

I would appreciate any advice for a new buyer.

I just saw someone else mention that here today, but that was the first I heard of it.

EDIT: I see now that thread was started by you. Plant enough rumors in enough places and you begin to hear it back to you, eh? Anyway, looks like you sorted that out.

I think this is sort of psychological for some people. Someone the other day on here was saying basically "screw it, the dealer wouldn't come off MSRP, so I'm getting a different car." It seemed like he automatically assumed the MSRP meant him getting screwed without thought for the actual price. I think everyone's so used to the wheeling-dealing and seeing it as a battle to not get screwed that they've become emotional about it. I think some people would be happier if the MSRP was jacked up 1,000 bucks and then they could negotiate down 1,000 bucks, but in the end it's the same price. But really, because of supply/demand, the dealers can charge MSRP (some are trying to charge more and getting it), so really your question is whether that is what the car is worth to you.
Personally, I don't care much for the dealing and negotiating stuff, so I am kind of happy that the car is priced such that MSRP is a fair price and that is what people are paying and there's not much to negotiate about.
Is saving a few hundred dollars going to be worth waiting months? Keeping in mind it might be the same situation then? And because invoice and MSRP are so close, it's not going to be more than a few hundred best case scenario I'm afraid.
You could always try negotiating for some extras thrown in, I think you'd have more luck with that than the price.

A dealer told me (so grain of salt) that the gap between invoice and MSRP is so small there just isn't a lot of room to work with even if there were tons of them sitting on the lot. He said part of the reason is Toyata responded to the Insight by cutting MSRP but not cutting invoice to dealers. Again, grain of salt but the first part at least seems to be born out by other things I've read online.

Don't know much about this, but I will say that recently I rode with someone who had a pretty cool Nav app on their iPhone. Wonder if you could do something like that with your iPhone (maybe that is what you are referring to with your last line here.)

All I can say there is that it is a personal decision. I didn't do it. There are some fairly extensive and somewhat heated threads on here about that, so have a look.

The 2010 doesn't have the bladder-type tank, it's a "normal" tank now. Though you should still be careful not to run out of gas. :)

I haven't got an answer for sure here either, but I have been looking into that too, comparing doing it myself, taking it to the dealer or a cheapy type place. My concern is whether Jiffy Lube will have the right stuff - the special oil (0w20) that not everyone seems to have handy (including some Toyota service departments, according to a thread here!) and the special filter insert/gasket thing you need instead of a whole stand alone filter. If they have those and can do it cheaper, I see no reason not to go to them I guess, though I'd make sure they are a bit familiar with your hybrid before letting them go crazy on it. You could also buy your own oil if you see a sale on it somewhere and then have them use it, and it may work out cheaper, but there's still the filter insert/gasket that I'm not sure they'll have and not sure you can get easily other than from a Toyota dealer or from ordering online. So it seems at some point, since you're only doing this twice a year anyway, that it jsut becomes easier to go to the Toyota dealership. Though I'd still shop around and see which one can do it for the best deal. But make sure they use the right oil! And that they are quoting you the right price for that oil, which is synthetic and will likely be higher than their normal price.

I'm pretty new myself so take everything with a grain of salt, but I'm in a similar position so have gleaned some of the above from reading a bunch of threads on here. Good luck!

hello and :welcome: to PriusChat! You are setting a fine example for all future newbies by doing a search and finding what you need and then asking to clarify.

Check outside of your region with regards to Blizzard Pearl availability. It could just be that your NE region doesn't want to order any more in. (or maybe they're keeping the white ones for gov't use?)

It's up to you whether you want to get the ext. warranty or not. If it makes you feel comfortable, then get it. If you don't want to spend the extra money, then don't.

There is no rubber bladder in the 2010 Prius. It now just has a regular fuel tank. Hurrah!

Paying MSRP is fine. Just don't pay over MSRP. If you're not in a hurry and would rather pay under MSRP, then wait. I don't know when that's gonna happen but again it's your call.

I recommend Toyota dealerships (assuming their prices are reasonable). Any local garage can do basic maintenance on the Prius but the reason why I suggest the dealership is because the rest of the car gets checked too, not simply just an oil change (why do you think it's cheaper in the garage? it's just an oil change and nothing more). My friend's 10 year old Camry with only 120,000km looks and sounds like crap compared to my friend's 13 year old Accord with 140,000km.

The Camry owner took it to jiffy lube, the Accord owner took it to the dealer. The Accord drives like new. The Camry has warped rotors, worn suspension, creaky suspension and loose bolts on the doors. The Accord, driven more aggressive has no issues with any of the above.

Acton Toyota in Littleton Mass. is one the highest rated dealers in the country. They also sell Toyota extended warranties at a huge discount. Do get your oil changed regularly at your Toyota dealer. documentation by them that you changed oil as reccomended is helpful when and if warranty work is considered. Enjoy your new Prius. I love my 2010.

I paid MSRP and was happy and did not consider arguing. I take my Toys to the dealer, they offer a competitive price and with the 2010 they should have the strange oil required. They have great WiFi in the waiting room along with some workdesks with power so I go during a workday lunch and can keep up with email and the like. Makes the time fly. They also have late night hours, after dinner, so sometimes I go after work and again surf. They often have free good snack.

*Should* you get an extended warranty? That depends: it is highly unlikely that you will ever get back the purchase price by using it, and only you can decide whether you get more "peace of mind" from a piece of paper versus money in the bank.

Thank you for the advice regarding extended warranty. It made me think a bit harder about the prudence of getting it. Yes, of course, to make money they have to charge quite a bit more than they are expected to pay out.

But then again, insurance companies have exceptional buying power in certain circumstances. And they get steep discounts individuals cannot dream of getting.

I decided to think about it a while before deciding.

Today I put down deposit on a Blizzard Pearl Prius III. I'm pretty excited. They told me before I put down the deposit that it will be there today, but afterwards they said it was coming on Friday. I was only mildly annoyed because I had already spent 3 hours there.

They also helpfully offered many wonderful additions. I carefully considered them all and declined after researching here:

Simonize System 5: Paint protection $350
    priuschat recommendation: Don't do it.

    Lojack: $700
priuschat recommendation: $700 is possibly good price. You are probably better off getting it from Lojack directly. Many recommend not getting it unless you feel that you have better than average odds of getting it stolen. Don't get it to get the insurance discount. People report that the supposedly 30% insurance discount you get is more like $20 a year.

    Alarm: $500
priuschat recommends not getting them. The immobilizer makes it very difficult steal the car.

    Vehicle Service Agreement: $1700
priuschat recommends not getting it from the dealer.
Some recommend not getting it. Some recommend getting it from priuschat for $1000.

Tire and wheel Road damage insurance: $600
Hmm... I couldn't find priuschat recommendation for this. I will pass anyway since new set of tires are around that price.

I just heard from the dealer that the car is in their lot. They just have to do the predelivery inspection. Expect a picture from me tomorrow or Thursday.

Thank you all for helping me through this. You guys really did save me tons of money. More important than that, knowledge and peace of mind.

I will be quite nervous until I drive away from the lot with the car. But that's probably normal. It's not everyday that we buy something that costs $24k.

    Happy Ending

I just picked up my new car. Blizzard Pearl III. It had 5 miles on it. The car was newly cleaned and all the stickers were removed. I was nervous about my salesperson moving the plate over, so I did it myself. Toward the end, a senior person ran out and made me stop it. He said if the owner saw it, he would have been fired.

I paired the phone, adjusted the mirrors and went on my way. The car was real fun to drive. And performed flawlessly. The traffic was terrible. Really jammed. It took more than an hour to get back to work. I loved every minute of it. It was so fun to drive!

The steering wheel button control is the best I've seen ever. I can control temperature from steering wheel control? Sweet.

My first trip: 14 miles. Avg speed 15 MPH. Mileage: 53.9 MPG

    Woo hoo!

Uhh, note that a service agreement is not an extended warranty. A service agreement means that you pay them in advance too much money for a lot of services the car doesn't need anyway and for others that you might want to have done elsewhere. An extended warranty is no bargain, but a service agreement is a real trip through the wringer.

Good choice! The tires come with their own (pro-rated) manufacturer's warranty.

Ah. Thanks for clarifying that. Good thing I didn't get it.
