Sorry, I forgot to mention.. (well I did earlier,) that my dealer and many others are giving the 5k service for FREE, which is far from $100. On my last Prius I got a coupon for a 5k service from both my dealer, and Toyota itself. I just don't understand how these places are fooling people into paying that, it's just mind boggling.

My Prius came with some "preferred customer" extra that amounts to two free oil changes. After buying, while my salesman was giving the final spiel, he included a coupon for a free oil change, bringing the total for free oil changes that came with my car to 3. Then I got them to give me two additional free oil change coupons to make up for some negligence and other BS that occurred with my car during the buying process. So all in all I have 5 free oil changes to use up with my dealer. If they're really going to be charging $100 a pop, then that is a pretty decent deal, and at least makes up for the $500 tint they slipped in under my nose when I bought the car.

Paid $18.01 at Toyota of Boone, NC for oil and filter change with 19 point inspection. Used my supplied Mobil 1.

Dealer had a 55 gallon drum of Kendall GT-1 0W-20 in the shop.

Inneresting. What would the price have been with their oil?

And did you opt to not have your tires rotated?

$70 total (Grossinger, Chicago): $30 to rotate tires, $40 oil/filter change using Valvoline Durablend. --I'll insist on MobilOne next time. I'd say the dealer's played pretty straight with me, keeping in mind they have a profit motive.

They charge upwards of $7 / qt. I'll have to find out what the actual service costs but they have always been very reasonable.

I have the tires rotated every 10K. They charge $14.95 for that service.

So assuming you paig about $30 for your Mobil 1, $18 for the change and inspection and $15 for a rotation, you're looking at about $65 for the 5k services. Not bad at all.

My dealer (Claremont Toyota) offers free lifetime oil changes on their cars. If I get the oil change 5,000 miles like the sticker recommends, will that basically be the bulk of the 5k service?

Have any of you considered having your tires rotated elsewhere? I think Discount Tire will rotate for free if you've bought tires from them in the past, and if they don't, it certainly has to be cheaper than the ridiculous prices Toyota wants. However, I'm pretty sure I've taken older cars there in the past that had OEM tires and they didn't charge anything for the rotation. It's a smart tactic - provide a free service like this up front and you'll probably think of them when it's time to buy tires. I know I sure did.

I guess I'm lost as to why so many of you feel it necessary to have simple oil changes done at Toyota. After the first one, why not take it to another shop that will surely charge less and hassle you less?

Yes, there has been some discussion of that, if not here then elsewhere in other threads. I'm keeping my options open at this point. One concern is whether the quickie oil change shop type places or your usual mechanic will have 0w20 around, the correct filter, if they'll fill it correctly, etc.
A lot of it will depend on price. For 100 bucks at the dealer, I'll be looking at other options. For $50 or $60, with the correct oil put in and the basic inspection by someone who is (presumably) more familiar with the Prius, I'd probably stick with the dealer as opposed to someplace I'll probably have to provide with the correct oil and filter cartridge, show how to use the Prius, and instruct not to overfill the oil (though some of that also might have to be done at the dealer sadly).

I stopped out at my dealer for the new owner get to know you Q&A.

They are offering 2010 Prius oil changes for $38.95 including a free car wash. Normal non synthetic oil changes are $29.95.

At that price I wouldn't even consider doing my own oil changes.

The service manager hinted that there is whole lot of competition for Toyota customers between the dealers in the area.

Hmmm, I wonder if they will actually use 0W-20 and rotate the tires for that price...

My strategy is to change the oil myself--as my old auto shop teacher used to say: "Nobody cares about your car as much as you do." I forget the rotations until the 15k service (Which I take to the dealer). The cost of most rotations are not cost effective. Better to replace the first set of tires with Costco ones, and take it there every 5k.

i just bought the oil and filter from the toyota dealer. paid $10.08 per quart for the toyota 0w20 syn oil and $5.41 for the oil filter. bought 5 qts of oil for a grand total of $59.44 with tax. granted i paid local list price. ( i didn't bother asking for a discount, i wanted to see what they would charge)

i will do the oil change myself, in my garage. so those of you getting you oil changes for $30-$60 better make sure the dealers are putting in the proper oil.

I do want to update that. We went to a Toyota "new owner's event" and it was AWESOME. The service manager told us that the new '10 Toyotas would be slightly higher, say $59 instead of $30 because of the new semisynthetic oil that they are using. So, I guess I should expect $60.

For anyone who gets the opportunity, GO! They may not all be as fun as here, but Toyota of Terre Haute in Indiana did an awesome job. They set off an airbag, showed us their diagnostic computers, their laser alignment system... answered questions for a half hour. It was cool.

Sorry, as I stated above... the girl at the counter didn't realize I had a '10 or something. She was just speaking off the cuff, as she hadn't even looked at the paperwork yet. It was free, so she said to just take the car and go. lol It should be closer to $50-60.

    :)

Just had my oil changed and tires rotated at the dealership where I bought my Prius. They charged me $36 for 4 quarts of 0W20 Mobil 1 oil (left 1/2 a bottle on the floor on the passenger side), $11 for the tire rotation and waived the rest of the cost for my 1st service. They quoted me $63 for the next oil change and tire rotation.
Not too bad in my opinion (better than I feared !) although I may try another dealership for comparison : they had quoted me a steep price for tire rotation but claimed to have 0W20 (Honda ?) oil without a premium on the cost.
