So, in my private, sticker only, parking lot at work today, I got keyed. A 5 foot deep scratch down one side, and a smaller (6 inches) but deeper scratch on the other.

It is 4 days old. It is the first new car I have ever bought. :(

I have never had this happen before, and am not really car savvy. Do I bring it to a body shop? What do they do to it? Any thoughts on cost?

I found out insurance won't cover it, but despite the personal expense, I want to make sure I fix it properly.
Thanks in advance for the advice ....

Depending on how deep it is they might be able to buff it out. That really sucks.....any ideas on who did it?? Are you reporting to the police? Check out body shops and detailers

    Do they have security cameras?
I think I would file a police report...

Sorry to hear about that. Did you check to see if the building's security cameras picked up anything?

Why won't insurance cover it? No comprehensive coverage?

    As people here have said:

    1. Check with building security to see if there is any film. Do it quickly. Often recordings are erased on a weekly basis. File an incident report with building security.

    2. File a police report.

    3. Get an estimate or two to go with the police report.

    4. Get comprehensive insurance coverage for the future.

My condolences. I've been keyed before and it really sucks.

    Thanks.

No cameras in the parking lot but I told the guy who manages parking.

I did file a police report.

Even though I do have comprehensive coverage, for some reason the insurance rep said they don't cover that....

That really sucks. My 2006 got keyed within a month or so of my buying it brand new (also my first new car) so I know exactly how you feel.

That's unusual that your comprehensive coverage won't cover it...my insurance company didn't blink an eye in covering me and let me research and pick the repair shop myself.

The scratch on mine was on the hood and cost somewhere between $400 and $500 to repair. Fortunately, I had a $100 deductible so it was mostly covered.

I'd call them back, hopefully speak to a different rep, and if you get the same response ask them why (and make sure they know you have a police report). If the answer doesn't make sense then ask to speak to their supervisor and repeat the process. (Make sure you're polite but firm the whole time.) Who's your insurance company?

That sucks balls. If you lived close by, I'd wet sand and buff on it for you. Some people just have no respect.

If you have comprehensive coverage, it will be covered. Just fight it.

Ifyou can feel the scratch, buffing will not do any good... the car has to be repainted. I really hope you did not get the Blizzard Pearl finish, it's a three coat paint job and very hard to blend...

Rude, rude and just no respect for other people's property!!! I know how you feel. My car is a month old and someone hit into our bumper when we were parked. Gouged out a circle with the front license plate screw. The f.... up thing? There was a driveway behind us where no one should have parked and even if they did- there were two car lengths behind us- There was no need ever to have come near our bumper. I hate people! Seriously. I hope the scratch gets fixed.

sorry to hear what happened. i got a teeny weeny bump and scratch on my spectra blue met. and it was a $1100 repair. they basically cannot match the paint so they would have to repaint the damaged panel AND the adjoining panel.

so, needless to say, the person who hit me wrote me a check for the estimate. i paid about $12 for a bottle of touch up paint (it was so new the guy spent a good 15 mins looking it up) and verified that yep...

it does not match up well. as for the rest of the money. the 2010 has become a pretty popular target. so i will wait for the next "hit" and hope its the same panel and get both fixed next time.

besides, it aint a lot of damage and Christmas is coming up

I work for an insurane company and Comprehensive coverage will cover it, but if you for some reason you chose to have a high deductible you might be at a loss. What is your insurance company? If you have a "low cost" carrier your comp. deductible may be as high as $1000 which in that case you will have to pay out of pocket. If you are over the age of 25 it realy doesn't make hardly any sense at all to have more then a $100 deductible for your comprehensive coverage as it usually only makes a difference of about $25 per half (6 months) vs. even a $500 deductible.

Check in to comprehensive coverage, it's very cheap and should have covered this. I carry it on all my vehicles.

Comprehensive will cover that loss, I am an insurance agent... who is your insurance carrier, if for nothing else, to warn others about this company that appears to be giving you the run around. If they continue to refuse I would contact your state DOI (dept. of ins.) and file a complaint. It would be good for you to obtain a copy of your policy binder, declarations page showing the effective date and proof of payment or in force status.

If it is a deep scratch down to the metal ...
The sanding, disassembly of moldings (and trim, logos, etc. for a good repaint) and repainting both sides of the car (and surrounding panels), and re-assembly could be $2000 plus or minus $1000 by some body shops.

The problem is that they usually say / feel that they need to paint a large area to "feather in" the "new" paint's very slightly different color.
Three layers, base, color, and clear coats.

A paint specialist shop might be able to match paint better and repaint smaller areas.

And, PLEASE, what is your insurance company?
I would like to avoid using them.
I have Farmers, and they seem good ... so far.
