they should make the car use the brakes, instead of regen, on the first couple of peddle pushes when starting from a cold engine.

So, we all have this squeek problem then... no big whup.
Since we actually use our brake pads so much less than an average car, they are going to be longer in seating and wearing in. I'm sure that 10K miles down the road, there will be enough pad wear to have them retracting back to where they don't squeek. Hope so anyhow!

This is a disk brake thing, not a Toyota thing. Brake squeal comes from believe it or not , not from the pads contacting the disks as you are assuming, but from between the steel backing plate on the pad, the steel shim between the pad and or the caliper piston.

About halfway down is what you need to do to get rid of the noise, apply the anti-squeal compound, only takes a few minutes and cost like a buck or two, or pay to have it done if you mechanically challenged or you take it to your dealer and have them do it, it's a VERY common and easy fix.

OK, I tend to agree with you -- to a point.

I really do think Toyota needs to get involved because the common thread here is that all of us have 2010 Priuses that were not making any noise until about 3-6 weeks into ownership. All of a sudden we ALL are having the same problem that acts the exact same way and only persists for a few minutes. Now, I am 50 years old and I have owned and driven and listened to alot of cars over the years. Most, if not all, have had disc brakes, and I have never, ever, experienced issues like this.

And to make matters worse, some of us have taken our cars to the dealers, and the dealers can't do anything! I would think, given the description of the problem -- and we all have been very articulate in our descriptions -- that a dealers would know about this magical paste that can be applied to the brakes/pads/rotors or what have you.

    I'm still not convinced --

Also, Toyota makes all kinds of cars with disc brakes. I would think the dealer I went to would, after listening to my very detailed description, turn to me and say, "Oh, sure sir. You need the magic paste!" ..

Yeah, not convinced. I'm looking to Toyota for answers on this one.

You look a lot older than 50 in your Avatar:eek:, must have lived a hard life. Just kidding
Dealer should have applied the "magic paste" right away is my opinion, but I put dealers right up there with Lawyers, so take that for what it's worth. Bad thing is the mechanics in the back could fix it in a hurry if it ever got to them, but your stuck to talking with some kind of stuffed shirt that simply makes up lies apparently (from what I have heard posted here on this forum).
I think you can continue to wait for Toyota, hope your not in a hurry, or fix or have it fixed yourself.
BTW it's not just Toyota dealers

On edit, I'm sure with the Prius being essentially absolutely quiet in stealth mode your likely to hear all kinds of noises that all cars make, just they seem louder in the Prius because the engine isn't masking them. Not saying the noise isn't there or shouldn't be fixed, just think it is even more annoying in a Prius than it would be in a "normal" car.

Roger that. I love the Prius, can't say enough about it to family and friends. I hear ya' about those "service reps" - what a bunch a clowns - they ARE a joke. Typically when I go to a dealership with a strange issue like the Prius squeaking, I tend to ask for a mechanic and have them hear it 1st-hand ...

    P. S. As for my avatar, smoking will prematurely age you! OH!

As a follow-up to my post about squeaking wheels, we finally brought our Prius to the shop...twice. The noise was getting worse, and louder. Definitely coming from the rear wheels. The service folks were really great about working with us, by the way - very patient and understanding (who wants to deal with a "squeak"?)

They couldn't find anything wrong when we brought the car in the first time, but the second time - yes, they could hear it too! Still couldn't find anything visually, though. So they filmed/recorded it with a video camera and sent that off to Toyota.

Toyota's recommendation? Resurface the brake pads and rotors...slightly. That did the trick! No more squeaks, and we're hoping it stays that way.

My question: why would you need to resurface the rotors & pads on a new car with only 1200 miles on it? I'm thinking that the tolerances on these cars are so tight that even the slightest warping on a rotor will cause a problem. But anyway, that's our story on the Mysterious Wheel Squeaking.

    Thanks, Eric.
Has anyone else had a chance to take their car in for service to have this checked? If so, please share your experience.

just wanted to add to the person that mentioned something about the paste. That paste will only get rid of high pitch squeeks from the caliper. If you have the grinding noise its from the rotor and not the caliper.

Well, I have given up on this one. I did get a call from a rep at Toyota Of America's Eastern U.S. region -- or some such title. The rep was nice enough and was very apologetic about my (our shared) problem(s), but he told me, and I quote:

"Toyota will not act on customer 'hearsay' ".

That's right, what I was writing Toyota about was, in effect, RUMOR!

Toyota will do nothing unless an authorized Toyota dealer "hears/witnesses" the squeaking. I explained my experience with my local dealer, in that they did not hear the squeaking -- after I waited patiently for nearly and hour and a half for a tech to look at my car. My dealer has no loaner car program.

I also directed the rep's attention to this PriusChat forum so he could see for himself that something was amiss, so he could read more "hearsay", but he was not interested. ....

Whatever. I think the best thing for me to do is to wait it out and just hope that many, many other 2010 Prius owners lead the charge to their Toyota dealers, and that eventually Toyota will see the groundswell of problem reports from dealers and will someday come up with a recall or service campaign or something. I just can't afford to sit in the dealership for hours and have those people tell me, "We couldn't hear anything, everything looks fine. It could be the weather." Uhghg.

Enough. I guess I should just be happy that my :mad:squeaking:mad: piece of crap Toyota gets 50+ mpg!

    UGGHH!!!

I have been hearing the noise for 2 weeks now.. I assumed it was from the electric motor warming up or something because once I get going the next time I take off from a dead stop the noise is gone.

That is a horrible response from a company such as Toyota. Did you get a name of this representative?

I received an email from Toyota Customer Service saying the same thing. In summary, they basically said that my complaint needs to be inspected more closely (like han, my dealer doesn't have loaner and I can't afford to leave the car overnight) and that the Priuschat.com thread is basically unwarranted and has no validation. I think it is rather discouraging that they would discount the voices of so many Prius owners across so broad a geographic range of ownership with the same issue. Toyota has just basically said that all of these owners' complaints are BS!...

Yeah, the rep's name was Nadar.

He only gave his 1st name -- but he is "the" rep for the east coast of the U. S. (so he says anyway).

He can't be too hard to find, no?

 "Thanks for your $27,000, sucker ... now stop buggin' us about your petty little squeaking problem."

    Yep. I get the hint.

I'm curious to know if you have noticed any changed in MPG with the plastic hubcaps on or off.

I'm also experiencing this problem. I have about 3,400 miles on the car and about a week or so ago noticed that when starting from stop, the car squeaks. I figured I'd mention it when I brought it in for the 5,000 mile oil change as others have suggested. I also e-mailed the Customer Experience Center.
