I purchases a used 2004 (13,500) back in March here in Rochester N.Y. I love this car, but today it did something strange. My wife stared the car as she always does, but the READY light did not come on. She had her foot on the brake as required, so she hit the power button again expecting the car to turn off. It did not. She waited a few minutes then hit the power button again and the car stopped. She tried to start the car again and this time everything worked OK. Since I am still a little paranoid about the whole concept of the hybrid, i had her take it right to the dealer to have them check it out. I was concerned that the car started on battery and that the engine would not kick in. The dealer told her that most likely she press the brake and hit the power button at the same time and this could cause the problem she saw. He is still looking at the car and I hope to get it back tomorrow.

Has anybody seen this before? Is the service tech just try to fluff us off or is the timing so critical that you have to wait a few seconds after the break is pressed?

    Thanks for any help

Welcome to PriusChat! You've come to the right place :)

It sounds like a common small issue- the "IG-ON" hangup. There's an article in the Knowledge Base that can help you out.

I don't think there's anything the dealer can or will do for you, it's so rare they probably won't be able to replicate it. If they can't see what's up when the condition is happening, they won't be able to fix anything. Don't worry about hybrid technology. There are thousands of us that use it every day. I personally refuse to drive a "standard" car anymore! :)

I was sitting in the parking lot talking with a coworker who happened to park next to me. I wanted to turn on the car perfectly quiet and make my exit in silence. I thought that would be neat. Instead, I got caught in an IG-ON cycle and the moment was lost. So yeah, it happens to all of us eventually.

I am trying to correlate the cause of the Ig-On hang. Anyone get stuck in Ig-On when intending to go to READY and either doesn't have SKS, or had it turned off and used the slot? I thought it was the immobilizer doing this. I was able to cause the immobilizer to disable the car, which appears as an Ig-On hang, with the red car and key symbol lit. When I got the Ig-On hang unexpectedly, it did not have the red car/key symbol lit.

 Thanks to all who helped. I have printed out the instruction on what to do and left them in the car for my wife in case it happens again.
