Tusen takk. Where is Hokksund? My daughter lived in Bergen and Oslo for six and a half years.

My new Prius is seven weeks old. I can't wait to see how it does in the snow.

Looking at the website, the coupons on Elk Grove Toyota's website show:

$54.95-- oil change only with synthetic.
$94.95-- complete 5k service with synthetic oil.

Just FYI...the local Discount Tire performs tire rotations for no charge, even if you did not purchase the tires there. YMMV though.

I have to ask. What is the "complete" $149 service?

its the car more than anything. i just got oil changed in 2006 $34. same dealer, for 2010 $74

**edit** oops. just checked receipt, it was $38 with taxes. so the 2010 "could" be $74 plus tax. i asked about the price when i did the SPM. well im just about to 5,000 so will find out soon enough

I just had my 5k service by dealership. They had send me a complementory coupon for oil plus filter. So they charged me 14.95 for tire rotation. That is it. When I asked the service manager if they will check brake rotors for wear, he assured me that on Prius it is not needed until 10K service since it uses regenerating braking. He commented that the brakes will probably last the lifetime of the car. My invoice states they used 0-W20. But I have no way to verify. Let's see what they will charge for my 10K service.

Yeah, based on the responses so far in this tread and what my friends with non-hybrid Toyotas pay for maintenance around here, I'm coming to the conclusion that the 2010 Prius itself has a much higher regular maintenance cost compared to other regular Toyotas and Hondas.

The Prius is costing me more than twice as much my 2007 Honda Odyssey for maintenance and insurance. Luckily, I drive a lot and savings on gas on my Prius will offset that extra cost, but boy, those looking for a financial justification to buy a Prius should think twice and do the math.

its been a long time since i have driven anything else, but my insurance went down when i started driving the Pri. you might want to check with your agent. not all of them are fully versed on what the Pri has. mine qualifies for nearly a dozen different discounts

I have Geico. I replaced my 2007 CR-V for the 2010 Prius and the insurance doubled. Called them and asked why? They claim the price asked is the standard price for the new Prius.

Them I started shopping around: Progressive, Travelers (discount for hybrids), Allstate, State farm: all them in the same range, with progressive being a bit lower.

Decided to stay with Geico because iI'm approaching 10 years with them and they are saying they will give me a big discount in my 10 year aniversary.

I pay $525 for my full coverage on my 2010 Prius (6-month policy)

I pay $205 for the very same coverage on my 2007 Odyssey.

I took mine into Miller Toyota in Virginia for the 5000 mile service and even with a $25 off cupon it cost me $102. They said they rotated the tires and did a special blessing.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm sticking with Geico. Their 5-year discount was pretty substantial and I'm guessing my 10-year will be as well.

Wow. My insurance went down when I got my 2006 Prius (from a 2003 Highlander). Not by a huge amount, but by some. Though I'll grant it went up when I traded up to a 2010. By $20/year or so as I recall. I'm insured through AAA, and my wife and I pay a 5 or 10 dollars more a year more for both cars together (hers is a 2005 Matrix) than you pay Geico for your one car. It was about $35 less per year until we decided to drop our comprehensive deductible from $250 to $100.

I was with Geico for several years until they pulled a similar thing on me when I went from my '77 Celica to a new RAV4 in 2000. I expected the coverage to be more, particularly since I was going from minimum insurance on a car I owned outright to full coverage on a car I had financed. I switched to USAA at that point and they charged me less than 1/2 what Geico wanted, for better coverage. Haven't given them another thought since. I'd still be with USAA if they hadn't had a problem getting me coverage when I moved to CA.

Honestly, I don't know what would be included for sure. Just before I went to the Toyota shop, I checked my owner's maintenance book and noticed a bunch of things listed for the 5,000 service. I assumed (yes, dangerous I know) the price quoted would be for what was listed in the book. When I got my oil service yesterday, they also gave me a check list of about 20 items that they had checked off as being ok.

City Toyota in Daly City, CA offers the 5K service visit for free. I'm still at 2500 miles so will be another 2 months before I go in. Bought my GenIII on Aug 1 during the first wave of C4C and am attending their New Owner Celebration event tonight. So far I'm very pleased with this dealership. Btw, where does it state that the GenIII need synthetic oil? Thanks!

i jus checked and my 2010 insurance is more than $100 cheaper than my 2006 on a six month policy. is that normal? can i expect the 2010 rates to go up more than inflation?

Jiffy Lube here is charging $80 for a synthetic oil change on the 2010 Camry. I presume the Prius is the same or close. That doesn't include tire rotation.

In this region ( emphasis ) the synthetic oil requirement is being extended to..
    all 2.5L RAVs
    all 2.5L Camrys
    all 2.7L Venzas
    NOT ( yet ) the 2.7L Highlanders
    all 4.6L Tundras
    all 2010 4Runners both the 2.7L and the 4.0L
    all 1.8L Scion xDs

It's partly true but it has little to do with the vehicle itself. It's purely a local issue. It's highly competitive here so several years ago we got the ball rolling with Oil/filters Free for Life ( $17 upcharge for synthetic ). Now at this time it's pretty much the norm in this locale. We then extended this to all Honda's, Chevys, Hyundai's and Acura's as well ( brands that we sell ) to the severe consternation of our competitors.

On my 2005 at 133,000 miles I've never paid a dime for oil or oil filters. YMMV.
