    I was sitting in park with power on reading my mail in the USPS parking lot.

    I pushed on the accelerator and the ICE started. When I let off the accelerator the ICE stopped. Did it several times just to make sure it wasnt simply trying make up for a current draw.

    Is there a reason the ICE will start in park when the accelerator is pushed. I would have thought that the car would be smart enough to know that the ICE was not needed.

    Just curious.:confused:

    It may just be smart enough to figure that the driver would be smart enough to push the accelerator only because he/she anticipated a power demand! :D

    After all (and more seriously, this time), what possible benefit may be had by pressing the accelerator pedal when in Park?

    None?

    So why would the ICE start if there is no benefit?

    I understand that this feature is there so that if you are troubleshooting something, you are able to turn the car on as needed. I did not search through all the threads again for this, but I know that I read it on the blog, and then tested this in my car a while ago.

    It works, I'm just not sure why. (I think it was initially posted under most obscure Prius facts, or something like that).

    Makes as much sense as anything I can think of.

    Thanks EGLMAINZ!

    (1) forced battery recharge;
    (2) forced warmup;
    (3) test for presence of fuel in tank;
    (4) test whether engine works;
    ...

    I vote with a_priori ... Prius decides that you pushed the gas pedal for a reason, not necessarily known to it, so at some point it will respond.

    I think this is a feature to force charge the HV battery.

    It can also be used during coolant change to get rid of the bubbles.

    While this is also what I think happens, the limited amount of testing I did (5 minute engine run with 3 bars battery SOC) showed that it did not in fact recharge the battery noticeably.

    Does anyone know for certain if the electric connection from the MG to the batteries is open when the car is in park? It has been confirmed that it is disengaged in ‘N’ and engaged in ‘D’. I would assume that it is also engaged during ‘P’ and ‘R’, but would like to know what the status is in ‘P’.

    Ppl there's a "maintenance mode" for running engine work (i.e. bleeding coolant, checking ignition timing etc.)

    With power off, foot off brake pedal
    Press power button twice (to ign on state)
    Press accelerator pedal twice
    Shift to Neutral
    Press accelerator pedal twice
    Shift to Park
    Press accelerator pedal twice
    Press power button (goes to ready state) engine will start and keep running

    Maintenance mode will be displayed in the MFD, VSC light will be on for duration of mode.

    Power off to cancel MM.

    That's nothing. You should see some of the crazy tap dancing on brake and accelerator pedal/door opening and closing performances when it comes to programming new immobiliser keys on various non SKS Toyota vehicles.

    I heard there was an issue with smog testing of prior generations. The ICE shuts off which makes it impossible to test. Maybe this is the fix, as it allows the engine to be run when in park.
