Just last night I pulled on to the interstate and had to move quickly to the far left lane because I had a turn coming up in about 2 miles. A big Ford truck (I think) came up right behind me and starting flashing his lights. I was going the speed limit -- about 60 or so. No way could I change lanes again. I just ignored him and somewhere he disappeared and I made my turn.

Amen to that. Although I think the phenomenon maybe be global at this point. The US certainly seems to be the epicenter though :(

Last week I was driving home after visiting a friend. I was in the right hand lane of a 55 MPH road. Since it was rush hour, the traffic was doing about 20 MPH. I was doing exactly the same speed as the car in front of me, and I had left a 2 second gap, as recommended by all defensive driving classes.

I noticed a red pickup truck behind me pull over onto the shoulder. I thought he was turning off. Nope! He just passed me and pulled into the gap in front of me, then slowed back down to a crawl like everyone else.

I don't think it had anything to do with the Prius. He was just a jerk who couldn't stand that I wasn't tailgating the car in front of me.

while in the right lane i've had people try to pass and squeeze in front of me to make a right turn.

i use the power mode, close the gap quickly, and screw them.

it's my turn to teach them not to f**k with a prius

Good point. I don't think most people particularly hate Priuses, they are just obnoxious jerks.

Next altercation, try this: "if you want to put someone in harm's
way, go do it in Iraq. Don't do it here, to your fellow american
citizens, on our own soil. You have no right to do that, and anyone
calling themselves 'patriotic' would know that already."

people in the states drive with no Aloha..

In Hawaii we just cruise.. Islands to small to be acting up.

I drive in Cali everyone drives like there always in a rush to go somewhere.. and gets pissed when I drive to slow.. 65mph??? you try change lanes and they dont let you.. to try make a left turn they block you off..

I think Hawaii is more Prius friendly

I'm starting to dislike mine as well, not because of the attitude of other drivers over me, because I'm really indifferent to that kind of behavior, but because of the rattle noises...

Remember they will give a license to anyone....even the uneducated, ill-mannered, emotionally challenged. As adults, we all need to use our brains to avoid situations and life-changing negative events. Or not. But then you subject not just yourself but all of your family to the results.

Yesterday I was stopped at a light right in front of the Hall of Justice in San Francisco. Literally right in front of the main doors. I was in 2nd lane from the left curb (one way street) and two rows of police cars and piece of crap citizen cars were parked and double parked taking up two of the traffic lanes. This ghetto resident sitting in an older 80's Buick with probably 24" rims on it just throws his passenger door open towards my car. Fortunately my window was down and I saw the door coming and actually grabbed it with my hand before it hit my car door. Out steps a frequent jail guest (I am pretty sure) based upon his look; gold teeth, tattoos, clothing and "faded" haircut which came to a point on top of his head. He gave me a very hard look. I just smiled, let the door go and drove off when the light changed. People like that, who have no consideration for anyone else, and think they own the streets, are not worth my time. While I am home with my family he is likely doing time behind bars.

It has nothing to do with the Prius.

It has to do with Prius drivers driving exceedingly slow.

If there are two lanes, be SURE you are in the right (slow) lane.

If there aren't two lanes, DON'T hold up traffic by going slow in an effort to get better gas mileage!! It is rude, inconsiderate, and selfish.

Go at least 5mph over the speed limit, and don't creep from stoplights. GO!

Having a Prius doesn't entitle you to inconvenience other people just so you can celebrate your own gas mileage.

    go.

    GO.

    GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

keep it in Power mode if you need to. Turn off the ECO!

I tend to agree with you on this. The first Prius' that I saw in my area a few years ago were mainly driven by retirement age people and most drove slower than traffic flow.

The trend that I see now, and especially with the 2010, the age has seemed to drop to the 40 to 50 year range, or younger. The younger owners seem to do a better job of keeping up with traffic than the older.

I think this is what has given the Prius the bad rap for being slow cars. People seemed to be surprised when I beat them off of the line at stop lights and either keep up with traffic or even pass a few cars along the way. I still get up to speed and glide as much as possible and get decent mpg.

I'll agree with everything you said EXCEPT this. No one should expect me to break the law. Just pass me if you don't like the speed I drive at.

Breaking the law? I mean, how many times we are cruising right at the speed limit and see a police car or other authorities car pass by much faster with no evidence of chasing someone?

I do not by any means encourage people to car race because it is unsafe and irresponsible but sometimes the speed limits are a little bit exaggerated and going a tad faster, as far as you drive defensively, is no problem!

I tend to drive faster than the speed limit, not a lot, yet faster; however, I use common sense too. If I'm driving through a work zone for instance and workers are close by I strictly respect the limit and sometimes go even slower. Same thing for school zones, etc…

So if you can get away with something illegal it's okay to break the law? Shoplifting is pretty easy in most stores. Do you do that too? Those police cars shooting past are also breaking the law.

I do agree that speed limits are often set artificially low, with the assumption that most people speed. This is a silly way to control speed. A speed limit should be a limit. Set it where it needs to be, and enforce it to the letter.

I agree. been a (new) Prius driver for 4 months now. I had no bad experiences with a Prius driver before I became one- but very aware of a potential bad impression I may give to non-Prii drivers.

So I heed the precautions noted by Muffin. Although, I've always been that type of driver. NEVER drive in the passing lane unless passing, and always checking my mirrors. After being an Offensive driver for many years, have moved to being overly Defensive. If I see a crazy driver behind me, or a tailgater, I try to let them go even without a glare. My thoughts go to - perhaps they're late for a flight or meeting, or the Daycare is closing soon. Not worth getting in a tizzy. Although, honestly sometimes I want to yell.

Bottom line. I don't want to give us a bad name - or substantiate it perhaps. I would hope that OTHER car makes/drivers would heed the Golden Rule.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. What I meant was that official authorities are supposed to set the example, if they don't, why should we? As an owner of a shop, do you do things (like shoplifting) in other shops that you would like to never see happening in your shop? Of course not.

Agreed. It's always been my feeling that the police and criminals draw from the same pool of applicants. There isn't that much difference in personality. Certainly there are individual exceptions, but I know many trouble makers that went on to a career in law enforcement.
