If the exhaust Heat Recirc system was bypassed AND the heat exchanger coolant inlet and outlets were not capped, an exhaust leak could happen....
ah, the infamous exhaust heat exchanger leak. that would mean loss of coolant and a fried engine. didn't realize it was a gen 3 problem.

4th gen did such a revision, and the head gasket failures went away. Unless coolant leaks in the exhaust heat exchange are neglected long enough.
