Agreed. The emergency key tucked into the fob is purely mechanical.
2012 v Five with 56,000 miles, no issues with traction battery.
Also meaning an unswitched OBD2 device left in the port will increase the parasitic draw on the 12V aux battery with predictable long-term...

I hope you don’t need to absorb panic stop loads using any of those mounting points or restraints.
Is it possible that during the (assuming 12V auxiliary) battery recharge, polarity was even briefly reversed?

Perhaps the OP means the "B" 'gear shift' position?
