In cold snowy Conn. My 2004 Prius will start, run,all lights work head, tail & turn. No lights no display gas gauge MPH cannot be read. Car is to go to dealer for 105K service Tuesday 1/6/09. Any ideas why this happens & what can be done to remedy the problem?

Sounds like a fuse is blown. Check for that.

    Hopefully, it's just a fluke.

And you checked that the thumbwheel switch for the display brightness has not been dialed to minimum?

+1 for this. Quite scared me when it happened to me. If you can see the display with headlights off and not when on, the dimmer is the problem.

Are you sure you didn't turn off the display? Press the Info button should bring it back to life if it was turned off.

Oops, I too thought the OP was refering to the MFD...

i believe to turn on the display again, once holds the display button down and keeps holding it until it turns on. i think info is the wrong key. but i might be mistaken

If the instrument panel display still cannot be read when the headlight switch is turned OFF or when you make sure the display panel dimmer wheel is turned up fully, then look for the 10A GAUGE and 15A DOME fuses and see if those are OK.

If the fuses are OK, then it would be reasonable to report the problem to your dealer.

    Hey, priusinconn & rigormortis,

Regarding the second's answer to the first : on my '05 to turn the display back on (once it's off), pressing & holding the display button to the right of the MFD does nothing except give one beep. To bring my screen back on, I press the info button to the right of the MFD (& assuming the brightness wheel on the lower left end of the dash is turned up far enough), when the screen starts to come to life, I touch the "trip info" box on the MFD screen & that will bring back your normal displays of energy/consumption & a/c & audio.

If that doesn't work, then yes, go check the fuses mentioned.

Priusinconn, I'm just down the road from you, just over the Coventry/Bolton town line, right off of Rt.44, near Indian Notch Park, on Bolton Lake. Who's doing your service? Lynch's in Manchester?

    Ken (in Bolton,Ct)
