04 Prius vs 06 Prius

    I am on a waiting list for an 06 package #7.
    Today I got a call from my dealer and he said he has a used 04 Prius with only 11k miles and the same color I want with a package #9 (the top package in 04). I test drove it and it is in excellent condition.
    The price for the 06 should be 28,035
    They are selling the 04 for 27,000

    If I buy the 06 that means I will get the $3150 tax credit, so it will actually be 24,885 (which is cheaper than the 04).
    They are telling me that they will reduce the price.
    I do not want to consider it unless the price is way below the 25,000 I am paying for the 06.

    I do know that only 60,000 units get the tax credit but I should be in that number.

    Any ideas?
    I am doing the right thing, aren't I?

    Get the 2006. There were a number of TSB's for the 2004 (as with any new model year). Always better to get a new one with all the software updated. You never can tell where the 2004 has been or been taken care of.

    Plus the tax CREDIT is an incentive. There will be NO Tax Deduction for buying the 2004, since it was already taken by the previous owner.

    Yes, hold out for the 06. If you are having problem getting what you want you might try Moses Lake. They have a very good reputation with Priuschat members and may be able to get what you want sooner than a Seattle dealer.

    Since I just bought a NEW 2005 pkg 6 w/NAV for $26,000 + tax and tags and also get the tax credit of $3150 - I would say the 2004 is way over priced! Now, if the price were $20K it might be worthwhile alternative for someone who needed to keep the price under 20K.

    Hold out for the 2006.

    Take 'em down to $20k for the '04 and it's a bargain, otherwise the '06 is a much much wiser purchase.

    Also try Portland. A couple of the dealerships had 06 Package 7 a few weeks ago but, I'm holding out for the color I prefer.
