    Hi all,

I would like to report that Kazu@Tochigi achived 1,562 miles/tank (2,513 km).
The computer mileage was 104.2 mpg (44.3 km/L).

    His previous world record was...
    1,467 miles/tank http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=24799&hl=

Please note that Japanese Prius tank has no bladder and can hold up to about 15.9 US gallons, 60 liters.

Realizing that sometimes large numbers and distances are difficult to conceptualize, I have created this comparison:

From New York City to Dallas, TX = 1,546 miles.

I don't really like these distance records too well because all you really have to do is get a bigger tank or stuff more gas into the current tank. Don't get me wrong I still think this is awesome because this guy still got over 100mpg on this tank. What I would like to see is 120+mpg on a tank. I want to see bigger MPG more than bigger distance numbers.

And yeah 37C? Damn thats hot.

Do you have any average speeds? Average distance? Technique used and at what speeds?

I was not aware of this, this may sound naive but what does it have instead?

    is there a reason?

No special modification was done on his Prius.
He just monitors Prius status using Japanese version of CAN-view and SuperMID M-1 mileage meter.

Yes. The outside temp was 37°C or 99°F, but he never used A/C.

The average speed on the last 292 km was 44 km/h (27 mph).
I don't know his average distance, but I'm sure he didn't do short trips.
The basic technique is pulse and glide. I think he pulses up to 50 km/h and glides down to 40 km/h.
He never drove on highway during this challenge.

The emission control standards are different between NA and other countries.

Ken, several folks on this forum have recommended using AC in hot weather to keep the battery cool, under the assumption that the battery's performance suffers in the heat. Others have suggested that air flow from keeping the windows open is sufficient and, with its greater convection, possibly better than AC. Obviously Kazu's experience suggests his battery is doing just fine. What is your view? Is there a consensus? What do the other Japanese hypermilers do in weather like that?

I believe it is better not to use the A/C for fuel effciency.
The most Japanese hypermilers are also doing so and patient with hot climate.

Anyway, the number of our 1000 mile club members are increasing rapidly these hot months.
Now, there are 82 members as of August 11th, 2007 and total 319 occurrences recorded compare to 56 members and 208 occurrences in May 2007.

Thanks! One more (two part) question and I'll leave you alone. :)

You and your colleagues are monitoring battery temperature, aren't you? What sort of battery temperatures are you seeing without AC on these 37°C days?

Australian Prius also has no bladder, just a conventional petrol tank. Evaporative emissions are looked after the way they are in conventional cars. The bladder is to achieve the super ultra low emission standard for CARB. This guy is doubling my mileage, Amazing but I'd hate to get stuck behind him.

Summer is on it's way here, most summers we get 10 days at a time with maximums over 38c and normally about 10 days over summer over 40c. I hate it, looks like the car would love it but I like air conditioning.

    Sure!
Please refer to following picture of the Japanese CAN-view.
You can see the battery temperature is 51°C.
