Since I became wealthy after an auto accident some two years ago -- NOT -- looking at the Prius battery and it is continually reading 12.2volts after sitting overnight.

While I can think of a lot of things I would rather do with $200....time to plop a new battery in before the winter really sets in, correct?

Why could I have not been hit by a rich software tycoon....?

12.2 V means charge and retest for me. Or better have a local parts store connect their tester.

Do software tycoons drive, or have professionals drive them around? Last high profile accident with a professional driver I recall was Princes Diana. Chances are slim to none...

My Prius battery seems to habitually run low. Even when young. That is why I now sporadically put it -- and the Subaru, which also gets much less use some seasons that others -- on a battery tender.

I ran it for years that way before finally replacing it last year. But then I'm willing to take a bit more battery risk than some folks, and haven't been hurt yet in several decades of waiting watchfully with a voltmeter. In a household with three vehicles, that has saved the expense of numerous battery replacements compared to folks who swap just on a calendar, or on that voltage without occasional top-up charges on a battery tender.
... because they run in my general neighborhood, not yours.

... though we have far more wanna-be's than real ones creating road havoc.

My threshold has been 11.95 V. In an abundance of caution, early is OK. In an abundance of cheap, carry jumper cables. <GRINS>

Or one of those Li-ion jump packs.
Most also work as back power supplies. Ran a lap top off the one I had.

As we used to discuss around here, like a decade ago, many 12 volt batteries will substitute

20 amp hour lithium packs now weigh one pound. Probably available on other side of Pacific :)

I would live with that but prop it up with tender charges but I do not live in the great northern freezing tundra with wolves sniffing around and whatever other beasts you got up there. I guess you can beat 'em off with your snow shoes if they get frisky...

    Here's the test:

Measure the dc at the front jump point with car off. Write it down.

With car off turn on the headlights in high beam. Leave them on for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes turn them off and let the car sit for a minute and measure again. If it has dropped 1 volt with that very benign load it has to go.

At 12.2 I bet it drops 2 volts.

    Good day.

Toyota says high beams for 30 secs after a drive or charging, to get rid of surface charge. 5 mins is a huge discrepancy?

Would those be 20 amp hour at an actual twelve nominal volts, or would they be following the widespread convention that seems to be followed in the marketing of lithium jump packs?

do not know Chap, I'm just luvin' them because I can run (low peak drain) gadgets all day in the field without hauling bricks of lead.

If they can boot up a Prius, good enough for this discussion.

Right ... just a thing to keep in mind when comparison shopping.
