    Nate,

Are the pins removeable and easy to relocate... or do you need to cut and splice wires?

I have a Thule Terrapin "box" that fits a 2" receiver and has lights. It would be nice to be able to use that on the Prius. I am not sure how it would be weight wise... so I would need to check that out as well.

    /Jim

This'll be groovy, Nate. A hitch will be within my first round of goodie ordering once my Prius comes in. Be nice to have the lighting hook-up!

Excuse my ignorance, but when we speak of "plug and play" does that mean there is a connector somewhere at the back of the Prius that this plugs into? I assume it plugs into the existing tail-light harness with a pass-through (plus a ground contact)? Just wanted to confirm what we're alking about.

Thanks Nate. That's certainly enough to get the project rolling! Thanks for doing the leg-work on the pin-outs. I'm sure I'll figure out something for the ground.

Curious about the L and R side harnesses (?) - does the part number you listed early come with TWO of these harnesses - one for each side? When I've done this before, the harness clpped into one side, and I had to pass a loose wire all the way across to the other side just to clip into that signal ware. Sounds like this one is a bit fancier with two harnesses?

Here's a pic from etrailer. It's all one piece, it's a box with a bunch of leads coming off of it, a T for the Right Hand and a T for the Left Hand, a ground loop, and a trailer connector.

It is no fancier than the kind that you are used to other than the fact that you don't have to crimp onto your existing harness. You do have to run the bundle from one side to the other. It's kind of implied from my photos, but pop the back parts (floor mat, cover, tray, etc) out of there, and you'll have plenty of access to all that you need.

As if you needed encouragement to tear apart your car, Darell. ;-)

Thanks, I ordered this part and will add it so I can have lamps on my rack, or use it with a (very) small trailer. No cutting or splicing!

Where did you pass the connector out of the interior so that you can hook up your trailer connector?

Yup! Enjoy! It would be nice if you, being less lazy than me, were to post better how-to info, at the very least, some "before" pics of how the pins USED to go. Hopefully Darell will put everything into his website, if he's not feeling too smug to be bothered, that is.

I'll be happy to take before and after photos. I'll think about the grounding also; I'm not sure I'll know the problem until I see the harness, but could you solder a connector to the existing harness wire, and then run a longer wire to a better ground?

    Superb! All makes sense now.

Yeah... *eventually* I'll take some pictures and show the pins and all. Might even take some shots in focus just for the occasion. :p
