Just got my 1st registration renewal notice from DMV. And this year both safety and emission inspection required on top of a hefty registration fee. I thought for new cars only one of them is required for the first year if not both exempt like it was for my 2008 Subaru that was totalled before I got my prius. Especially I don't understand why we have to have emission inspection get done for just one year old Prius now? Confused!!!

Every state and even county is different. Colorado hasnt done emmision testing on ANY vehicle for a long time. It is really sad because there are lots of old beaters that leave a trail of blue oil smoke as they drive along and nobody can do anything about it...

A visit to your DMV site should clear things up for you.

My state does not require emission testing for hybrids.

I don't know where in Colorado you've been hiding, but there's been strict enforcement in the entire front range area for years.

In the very republican county of El Paso, it is a very real statement.

Beginning January 1, 2007, the basic emissions test is no longer required for gasoline powered vehicles in El Paso County.

The irony is that all of those smoke-belching beaters were exempt in the first place. So, testing requirements were imposed only on the most efficient vehicles out there and the most inefficient ones did not require monitoring. :censored:

When I lived in Jefferson County Colorado 20+ years ago my neighbor used to register her vehicles in Clear Creek County using a PO box because they couldn't pass emissions testing and CCC didn't require testing.

My current county of residence exempts hybrids from emissions testing for the first 5 years. I wish it was longer.

Thanks everyone for the valuable info and I do wish UT had hybrid car emission exemption but it doesn't. But at least you can still drive on HOV lane solo though, thank goodness! What's crazy to me is I bought the car in 2009 and it would have been exempt from both safety and emission inspections this year if it wasn't MY 2010 car so I'm thinking I should've waited buying it until 2010 then it would be exempt from both for at least another 2 years! :) Oh well, they are not that expensive to get done as I've found out that a tire store around where I live will charge about $27 vs. a Toyota dealer's charge of $47. Although I do believe the dealers maybe able to provide a better and safer service as not many outside servicers are familiar with the hybrid cars yet! :)
