I had a 2004 Silver Prius with Nav etc with 32,000 miles. I think it was pack 9 for that year but it had alot of things that I didn't care about but had to buy if I wanted a Prius. Almost everything they were selling was packed. I think I paid about $26,000 for it and had to drive 350 miles to get it. I decided to check out a 2007 and was suprised at what I found. The difference for a Prius that had the pack that I wanted, #2, ( I don't care about GPS, HID, turning on my house light from the car, auto dimming mirror, etc) was only $4,000 difference. Because it was after Sept. 30th, I only got the $1,575 tax credit so it brought the difference down to about $2,500. I didn't have to make the payment that was due on the 2004 so I saved another $500.

Why didn't I sell it direct you might ask. Because when you trade a car in Washington state you only pay tax for the difference between trade in value and new car price That's tax on $4,000 instead of $24,000 at 8%. All in all I've never had a car I've driven for 3 years and paid so little difference. My car depreciated less in 3 years than a regular car depreciates when you drive out the door.

Any other stories out there about trading in your Prius?

Eh? So you essentially paid for a downgrade from your previous Prius?

I will be trading in my 2004 silver Prius too with 12K miles and NAV . This time I ordered a silver
with #6 LEATHER . I had ordered a 07 Touring but when it came in no NAV so I refused it , it sold in 2 days . In the Northeast the Touring cannot be ordered with NAV or leather so I switched to
the standard Prius w/ Leather . I hate the plastic covers on alloy wheels anyway LOL. And yes the 2004 cost me ~$26,000 and the 07 will be close to $30K ouch and no idea yet what my "difference" will be until new car comes in . Same thing in NY we only pay TAX on the difference in new car price and trade. I like the 45-50 mpg to switch to any other type of car .
And I had no problems , only the 3 recalls so far . OH YEAH and the problem with filling gas at "some" stations I have to pump the gas VERY SLOW . other than that it has been fine.

well, i also had to upgrade to a 2006 due to an accident. my 2004 pkg #1 with wiper was total
$22,034.47 out the door (that included an additional $70 for custom license plates)

drove it 25 months, put 30,000 on it. it was totaled. the other insurance company paid for my rental for 3 ½ weeks. because of the amount of the settlement, it had to be escalated and approved by 3 different managers. but they gave me a check for $23,509.80

i purchased a 2006 pkg #4 with an additional $2200 in options. total cost $26,307.74 (still included $70 to RETAIN!! my personal plate)

so i upgraded BIG TIME to a brand new car and it cost me $2800.

all in all, i am happy with my accident. but sad to see a Prius going off the road. (although the salvage team said they could EASILY get $30,000 by parting my car out)

ok just to add to my previous post. it was only 28,000 miles. was guessing on that.

also, because of the great work by Fred Hamilton at Toyota of Olympia, i was able to drop off my rental a day earlier than the deadline imposed by the other guys insurance company because my 2006 came in before the tax credit deadline in only 3½ weeks.

first choice on color and package...

I traded a 2004 pkg. 0 (TRAC car, 13k miles) in on a 2005 NAV. Got $20k even on trade, same amount that my dad had paid for it new. MN same way on saving sales tax when you trade in. Got $2000 tax deduction on it (as on the 2004). Went from Driftwood/tan to a silver/gray.

Then traded the 2005 in (with 21k miles) on a 2006 NAV/leather. Got $23k on trade (I'd paid $25k for it new) and 3150 tax credit. Went from the silver/gray to a black/gray leather. This new Prius was $29k though!

Will be trading the 2006 in on a 2007 early next year. Should get the reduced tax credit. This time I'm going to skip the OEM leather and go aftermarket so I can add heated seats and black or very dark grey leather. Also going from a black car to magnetic gray. Non-touring edition.

Price on the 2005 and 2006 was MSRP - $250 as a return customer to same dealer, also took $400 off price each time, under the college grad finance program through TMAC.

Not too bad, huh? Unfortunately, I made up for that somewhat when my wife traded in her loaded 2004 Accord on a 2007 Camry Hybrid last month. I only got $17.5 or $18k on trade for that Accord, which cost over $25k new, and was low mileage and perfect.

Yeah I don't understand why the OP is excited about this either lol, he gets a lower model package Prius which will have lesser resale in the future, and he has more payments to pay and he paid $2k to do this. I see no positives for him here...

I may have you beat. My '06 Prius cost $350. The details:

    1) Bought '05 Prius in June, 05 for $23,500.
    2) Traded it in April '06 for '06 Prius for Pkg #4 at a cost of $25,500, but received $22,000 in trade for a difference of $3500. Trade difference was $3500.
    3) Deduct the $3150 tax credit and I was left with a difference of $350 plus taxes.

Friends couldn't believe I was trading in an '05 Prius for an '06, but when I explained the math, they understood.

:D I'm happy with my 'deal' to trade my 2004 Pkg 8 for my 2007 Touring Edition Pkg 6.

Looks as if Toyota has essentially 'caught up' with the Prius demand. North Texas dealers have 5 to 10 Prius on their lots ready for immediate delivery. This should result in improved 'bargaining room' for Prius buyers. The possible "down side," resale values of used Prius will probably decrease as new Prius supplies increase.

For my 2004: I paid $24,500 and got ~$21,100 in trade [22K miles on the odometer]. I've *NEVER* owned a car that retained so much of its value over a 3-year model range. I believe if I had chosen to sell it myself 'on the street,' I could have gotten about $2,000 more but the 6¼% Texas sales tax on the full MSRP of the new car would have consumed a good part of the difference, and I would have had to sell some stock to get the extra $20,000 in cash to do the deal that way.

I upgraded considerably: [a] Touring Edition; Side Airbags; [c] Tire pressure sensors; [d] Leather interior; [e] HID headlights w/fog lights; [f] 16" wheels w/ Bridgestone Turanza tires; [g] Hi-res MFD; [h] Updated NAV DVD; Fresh Warranties; [j] MP3/Wma playback capability; [k] $1,575 Tax Credit; [l] Better suspension; [m] Restored "New Car SMELL with Leather!

I haven't calculated exactly the 'net difference' I paid.
