I have a 2004 that all of the sudden will not go into gear or start, it was fine one evening and then the next morning nothing.

The traction battery was replaced about 2500 miles back and the 12 volt about a month ago.

All of the lights are on, on the dash. But there are no codes. I can hear a light click when going from park to neutral and back.

What do I look for next?? Thanks Dave

How do you know there are no codes? Did you get a new traction battery from Toyota? Or a rebuilt from?

Maybe it's your brake light sensor, press the brake really hard and see if the car starts

To be clear I just bought this car in this condition.

I checked it with a scanner. The traction battery was bought used a couple months back, the PO said that everything was fine when he parked it the night before.

I was hoping to find a bad battery, I went through mine a couple months back and still have a bunch of modules left.

I will check it, I thought about unhooking it to possibly reset the system.

So you bought this car hoping it's the battery? What is "po"?

Disconnect the 12v negative and reconnect after 10 seconds. See if it'll start.

Yes because I can repair the battery (at no cost).

    PO Previous owner.

I just went out to try pressing the brakes harder, and now the red turtle has shown up on the display.

If the car had an electrical fault you won't be able to start it.

I'm wondering that now the red turtle is on, that it may have a code. I don't have the scanner available tonight.

It is very unlikely that a generic scanner will give you anything from the important ECU's in the Prius, just generic engine codes at best ( and they can be false positives). If you are going to DIY, you have to get one of the Prius specific readers, like the mini VCI.

I unhooked the battery and nothing changed.

I have a scanguage in my other prius, I will have to pull and use it.

Did you unplug the orange plug on the hv battery? You have to click it/lock it back in place for the car to start

No it has not been touched lately, I learned that lesson the first time I reinstalled a battery. Lol

Yup, get a "Prius Aware Scanner" and pull the codes. Make sure you have good connections for the 12 volt. Check the voltage at all connections in the back and also up front in the fuse panel (jump post and strut nut).

Red Turtle (Hybrid System Failure) Should have DTC Codes stored unless you disconnected the 12 volt. Codes should reappear though once the dash lights up.

Good luck dude, hope you did not get suckered by the PO.

Best scanner for DIY today is the Mini VCI with the knock off Techstream.

With my scanguage, it does not show any codes. The 12v battery is down a little 11.6, I have it charging. My guess is its a little low from all the testing.

I got this car for a song, it will part out for much more than I paid.

I have looked at the Mini VCI, can I get them here? They all appear to be in China on feebay.

Scan Gauge is useless for retrieving DTC produced by ECUs other than the engine ECU and maybe the hybrid vehicle ECU, look for Mini VCI on amazon.com
