Smart key not smart anymore, it won't start the car unless I inserted the remote unit to the key slot underneath the steering column.

Smart key works with doors, trunk.

    1. checked the Smart Function is On (KEY button not depressed)
    2. Change new 3V battery inside the remote

    any help will be appreciated

I am assuming that the Smart fob allows you to lock and unlock the doors and hatch without having to depress the fob buttons. If my assumption is correct, then the Smart system is turned on.

Sounds like a Toyota dealer service dept visit is warranted. There is a sensor inside the passenger cabin that is supposed to note the presence of the Smart fob within, thus allowing the car to start. That sensor may not be functioning.

Make sure there is nothing else near the interior sensor that could be blocking the signal, such as a radio or poorly positioned cell phone. Most likely it is the interior sensor as Patrick suggests.
