wondering if anybody has had to replace the rubber piece that releases the trunk?

When it is cold and freezing (California), the rubber piece is so hard, I could not even open the trunk.

The rubber piece kind of dried out.

Toyota replaced it under the 100k warranty I purchased, otherwise it would have cost $250

I have had my car almost six years and it has 95k miles.

The rubber piece they replaced it with is different than what was on there before.

There have been reports of melting in hot weather. It seems like it is very dependant on solvents used. Like the cleaning agents in your carwash or something.
