So Lion Electric Vehicles is taking orders for brand-new 2008 Ford Ranger pickups to be delivered to their conversion facility, converted to pure EV and delivered to customers in June. Particulars are located here; they claim a 200-mile range and have tested the truck to 80MPH using a LiFePO4 battery pack. The truck comes with the factory Ford warranty for everything other than the drivetrain, which is covered by LionEV's 70K-mile warranty. All for the low low price of $39,000. If you have your own Ranger they will sell you the DIY kit for a mere $14K - $26K depending on what kinda batteries you wish to use.

Their website shows the conversion process, and it is a pretty interesting read. The facility looks immaculate, and the conversion very professional. They also convert Ford Escape hybrids to PHEVs or pure EV. They claim a city rating of 140MPG for the plug-in (due I suppose to electric-only operation below 47MPH). The Escape PHEV is the same price as the Ranger, but delivery dates have not been announced.

I need like a million of you guys to buy one of these so the prices will drop and I can afford to buy one (though they do have a used 2006 Escape PHEV with 15K miles on it for $35K).

With the planned closing of the NA Ranger plant after the 2009MY, anyone interested might have to get in line soon.
