2008 Prius Cold starting

    Prius was starting and running fine. We had a sub-zero morning and everything seemed to start ok. Lights radio, display. When I attempted to shift into D, it would only shift to N. I tried multiple times; turned the car off & on again, no luck. It was not drivable. When I got home that evening, it started right up. Is this a symptom of a problem, or normal? Thanks for knowledgeable input.
