Hey guys! Just joined the lovely world of prius and it is awesome, but boy am I having trouble figuring out what's wrong with it! Got all those fun brake system lights on and no luck yet.

    Thus far I've checked:
wheel hubs, brake pads, and rotors.

How should I check if the brake actuator is bad? Or the ABS is bad?

Also what in the heck is that high pitch hum and that quick turning on sound in the video?

Thanks guys, looking forward to being a pro prius repair dude

oh hey also worth adding, seems like a bit of a crunchy sound and something wobbly in the front of the steering column when braking (but I've checked the pads, but maybe could that be coming from the rotor being a bit warped? rotor looks great to me, comparing it to what a good rotor should look like)

Do you have a way to check the codes?

Hi SkiBob, I used a OBD2 and came up with C1343. Do I need another tool to get different codes?

It’s possible. OBD2 readers can read emissions codes but may not read Toyota specific codes, like for brakes. You might get more codes if you use a Toyota specific reader like Techstream. Plenty of those around. Here’s one but it would take a month to get this one.

Cheapest MINI VCI for TOYOTA Single Cable Support Toyota TIS OEM Diagnostic Software

You would need an older single core laptop or netbook to run it also.

I think i figured out code reading: using the paperclip trick i read these codes:
Counted the ABS flashes: I got 42

    VSC: 45

    (!): 64, 65

For the humming part for my gen 2, I dont have any error codes or problems, but on idle the engine bay does have a hum as well, I always thought it was just how the electric motor works when its on idle, but ill have to check again to see if its as LOUD as what you have.

The whining noise is normal and is a combination of the Inverter humming and the coolant pump running. The noise at 0:20 is the accumulator pump running to keep the brake system pressure up. All noises in that video are normal.

@aywood, here is what my engine bay sounds like on idle so you can compare, I do not have any code lights on dash and I am driving fine, for now. So id like to say nothing sounds out of the ordinary, good luck.

I received the following PM, but felt the answer belongs in this thread.
    That is a good question.

One thing it points out is the code reader you used only could see one code, the C1343, whereas the car had 4 codes for you, the C1343 and 3 others.

The decode of the X####/99 notations is:

X#### = the DTC you would retrieve in Techstream, or other Prius aware scanner.
    / = delimiter
    99 = Blink Code

So to use one of your codes as an example, C1343/64, the blink code 64 = DTC C1343.

    Hope that helps.
