    And debunks the myth that hybrids are only useful for city driving. The test clearly shows that the Prius achieves nearly the same fuel economy under all tested driving conditions-- city, highway or backroads.

    Interesting..... They mentioned the inaccuracy fo the Prius III fuel consumption display, between 11 and 14% optimistic. That seems consistent with what others are reporting.

    Thanks for the post. One thing that I find rather unrealistic -- how many people do 200 miles of city driving in one day? I would imagine the usual city drive is 2 to 10 miles -- or go a mile or two to the store, turn the car off for 30 minutes or so, turn it back, go another mile or two to the next store, and so on.

    Thanks for the article :)

    While I agree with the overall rankings, the article is at best still laughable (if not embarrassing) considering that this is yet another attempt by Edmunds at pretending to be experts at something they have spent decades proving to their ignorance in. Sadly, this piece is still a solid testament of that legacy.:(

    Cheers;

    And in case someone missed this: diesel is not gasoline. It is a denser fuel, that contains ~12% more energy per litre. Because this difference is often overlooked, these kind of mpg comparisons tend to end in favour of the diesel.

    When looking at the energy consumption, say MPJ (miles per joule), the Prius beat the TDI by a 40% margin. 40% more miles per unit of energy.
