I am in the process of purchasing a 2011 Four. The dealer asked if I would like the nitrogen option. I had no idea what this was as it is not mentioned in any of the brochures. Here is what he said "nitrogen your tires will last longer because the molecules are larger than air so your not going to lose pressure as fast. It will give you a little bit better gas mileage because it is a lighter molecule plus you are never going to get water build up like you would with regular air.. The nitrogen is only 29.99 and it is a lifetime refill."

Anybody have any experience with this and does this seem correct?

The ambient atmosphere is 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. Only a fool will pay a dealer for what is already there.

Thirty bucks to fill your tires with "nitrogen?!?!?!" This guy's got a boat payment due, for sure. Since air is about 78% nitrogen, you are only enriching it by another 22%. Sounds like a rip-off to me.

here is what consumers had to say about it: Tires - Nitrogen air loss study

Natural air is 78% nitrogen anyways; granted humidity and CO2 will make pressure vary from temps, and 20.5% of oxygen oxidizes rubber (from inside and outside)..

Still this is firmly listed as gimmick in my books

    Hmm... another Nitrogen thread.

You can buy a Costco membership and refill on Nitrogen whenever you want.

$29.99 for the privilege of waiting 1 hour for them to fill air into my tires whenever I want? No thanks.

Simple solution, just don't buy the option during purchase.

If for whatever reason you decide you want it, the dealer will still be glad to take your money in the future (I'm willing to bet $29.99).

I'm not going to pile on.
    Well.....maybe a little.... :D
The good news is that the nitrogen won't hurt anything---'cept your wallet. Unless your job description is "Commercial Airline Pilot" or "Space Shuttle Commander", you don't need to use nitrogen in your tires.
The bad news is that if they're trying this song and dance on you, then they're probably trying to ream you out on some other 'goodies' that you don't need. (GAT, Warranty, Credit Life Protection?)
If you haven't already signed the purchase order, you may consider telling the dealership that they're a bunch of crooks and that you intend to report them to Toyota's Customer Care system.

Good Luck with the new car!
Let us know how you make out!!!

If nitrogen diffuses out of tires slower than other gasses in air, your tires already function as nitrogen concentrators and would gradually increase in nitrogen concentration above the 78% in air. With little risk of a tire fire in a car, you're better off with nitrogen in your Viagra than putting more to your tires.

Lemme guess: he also offers paint and fabric protection packages and an extended warranty.

While waiting to hear from you guys, here is what Popular Mechanics web site had to say on the subject.

"There are several compelling reasons to use pure nitrogen in tires.

First is that nitrogen is less likely to migrate through tire rubber than is oxygen, which means that your tire pressures will remain more stable over the long term.

Passenger cars can also benefit from the more stable pressures. But there's more: Humidity (water) is a Bad Thing to have inside a tire. Water, present as a vapor or even as a liquid in a tire, causes more of a pressure change with temperature swings than dry air does. It also promotes corrosion of the steel or aluminum rim.

How is water relevant to a nitrogen discussion? Any system that delivers pure nitrogen is also going to deliver dry nitrogen. Filling tires with nitrogen involves filling and purging several times in succession, serially diluting the concentration of oxygen in the tire. This will also remove any water. : end of quote.

I guess it could still be a rip off but this is another opinion.

It is a better idea to get in the habit of checking tyre pressures when you refuel, than relying on nitrogen to keep the tyres properly inflated. It is also about $30 cheaper.

    My first thought as well.

As per the advice given, save your money and do not give that dealership the satisfaction of collecting your thirty dollars.

    I found this:
    http://www.getnitrogen.org/pdf/graham.pdf

Which purports to be an explanation of why Nitrogen is a smaller molecule, and why you should use Nitrogen in your tires. I note a severe lack of numbers. If it is precisely true, the following is
still a valid interpretation. Oxygen molecules escape from your tires 3 times faster than Nitrogen, and you will lose three molecules every month of Oxygen and only 1 every month of Nitrogen. In other words, who cares. Of course, it could be more than that, but if it were very large, that would be a useful thing for a scientist trying to sell Nitrogen for his employers to say. Since he doesn't say it, I am forced to conclude that it isn't the case.

Since I live in a place where the temperature regularly changes, and since I am concerned about the pressure in my tires, I check them often. I am convinced that this loses FAR more pressure than diffuses through the rubber. As an example, I have put on spare tires not significantly deflated after many years of complete neglect.

Don't garage compressor have water vapor filters?
