At the first oil drain would like to replace oil pan drain plug with one that has a magnetic tip on it.
Does anyone know the thread pitch, length, and such for this part?

Just stick a neodymium magnet on the OEM one?

I've actually made my own by drilling out the cemter on a lathe with a 1/8 inch drill bit and locking in a 1/8x1/2 Neodymium magnet with green sleeve locking Loctite.

My logic tree dictates that I have one ready for my first oil change.
Attaching a mag to an OEM plug or M12/1.25 bolt is a good idea and was going to do that.
By the time I get a neo-mag and bolt together I could probly play some golf, do some work in the backyard....
And I'll forget to get THAT ball rolling.
    So I ordered one.
    $18+ inc shipping.
    They use 5000 gauss neo's I think.
It'll be on my porch probly around the same time as the oil change is ready.
    It's brilliant really.

your efforts are appreciated - thank you

    Even better;

TOYOTA LEXUS NISSAN INFINITI OIL DRAIN PLUG MAGNETIC | eBay

I like aluminum with a copper washer.

The Toyota service dealer overtightening it would more likely strip the softer aluminum threads than the "steel" threads of the nut welded to the inside of the oil pam.

$7.50 delivered is a great deal.

    That's a good price.
Looks like a well made piece.
Not so sure of the aluminum theory though.
But I s'pose you could always drop the pan and clean out any offending members.

    magplug.jpg Arrived today.
Tried a pretty decent magnet from something else on a compass.
From about one inch away it moved the needle.
This magplug moved the needle from almost a foot away.
    Impressive.
If there is any metal in the oil...guess where it's gonna end up.

    Bolt is steel (preferred).
The magnet is triple Gold plated for strength and durability.
    Made in USA.

Not sure I would like the entire bolt magnetized.
If so, debris would collect on plug threads and could be a remove/install problem with pan threads.
It would also have a good chance of leaving debris in pan as it 'wiped' off threads as you removed bolt.
This one is steel but the threads and head of bolt show very low mag properties.
The washer isolates in a sense, compresses to seal ,and is non'mag, probably aluminum.

Anyone interested in the Genune Toyota OEM oil drain plug bored out on a lathe to take a 1/4 dia x 1/2 N48 neodymium magnet with a lift capacity of 8.63 pounds and fitted in with 640 permanent Loctite? That's the type used to retain cylinder sleeves in engine blocks.

These are NOT cheap to make and would be the best availble. It will use the Genuine Toyota steel oil drain plug, which sells for nearly $5 retail. The magnets are about $3.50 each. I will include a genuine Totoya OEM washer gasket.

The delivered price would be $20. I will need at least 15 buyers to make this cost effective.

    Please let me know.

Of course they would be the best available.
Nobody would dare to question that.
Might get another as spare if you use 650 Loctite and it could pick 9 pounds.

I'm proposing making these for ablut cost, mainly because of the "economy of numbers" and that the cost of my time and labor is not that important to me, becuase I am making it for my own use.

I'm just disappointed in the quality of the stuff available out there. They are all made in China or Taiwan. They might work, but they are definitely NOT the best.

After inquiring one of the sealing washers, I am surprised on how much engineering Toyota spent on making it. It appears to have been made of soft malleable aluminum with a sealing polymer compound bonded to each side.

Anyone have the 5k to 10K oil change on a magnet drain plug?

I added a magnet plug and the collection of material from the oil is barely noticeable.

The magnet won't attract bits of aluminum. It's an aluminum block and head. Also won't attract sand, such as casting sand.

Nice idea, worked well in "lump motors" (cast iron blocks), but probably not very useful in a modern engine.

Now, if you could put one on the HSD -that- might be useful!

    Think so!

The cylinder liners are still iron and, as well, the rings are, too.
