I know about the 10K mile interval. But, after how many months going by, can I take my car in for its free dealer oil change?

10K or 12 months, whichever comes first. They recommend an inspection and tire rotation at 5K/6 months as well.

First two at 5000 mi. THEN 10000 mi. At least in Canada. It's 8000 km then 16000.

My 2011 has 4,700 miles on it, and there is a "Oil Maintenance Required Soon" message on the dash every time I enter the car.

I'll be doing my first change at 5,000 miles.

The original oil change interval for the Gen 3 Prius in the USA was 5K miles. Itwas changed (I think in late 2010) to 10K miles, although the tire rotation interval recommendation remains 5K miles. Toyota claims that they have kept the maintenance reminder interval at 5K miles for tire rotation, but I suspect that they either want to encourage earlier than required oil change intervals to feed their dealers, or that it is not easy or possible to change the maintenance interval on cars that are already in service.

The nag dash display light comes on when the odometer comes within 500 miles to the next service interval. So it started at 4500 miles.

Does that go out by itself once I change the oil, or am I going to have to reset it somehow?

    Thanks for the reply

It needs to be reset--there's a sticky on how to do it, and the instructions are also in the owner's manual.

As I said above, the first two oil changes are at 5000 mi, -then- you go to 10,000.

No, the first oil change is at 10k, per the manual.

Check your manual. 10k is specified for model year 2011.

That depends on which country you are in.

Ok, in the States Toyota says 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. In Canada it's 8,000 kilometers (roughly 5,000 miles) or 6 months. What is in other parts of the world? Even longer than 10,000 miles? I think I heard something like that, for Europe.

Personally I like the Canadian interval noted above, would stick with that regardless of what Toyota says in future. Just my preference. It may be slight overkill. Four liters of oil, responsibly recycled, every six months, is minor comparing to the multiple hundreds of liters of gas typically consumed in the same period.

Toyota say one year regardless of miles -- many manufacturers go out to two years with synthetics - because of the additive pack -- most worried about any acidic condition. With the small quantity the engine holds -- probably not a bad idea.

My 4-1/2 month old Gen III has 12, 550 miles and I have it in the dealer today. It is the first time it has been in for service since the first 1000 mile. 5k came and went before I could get to a dealer. As you can see the next 5k is due in a month.
