2014 Prius maintenance recommendations

Whoever owned the car before you did a lot of unnecessary services, especially the coolant services at 45k and 50k. Did the previous owner service the car at the dealer? Hell of a job upselling to where ever the car was serviced. None of those services are recommended until well after 100k miles.

The oil changes, I would start doing them at 5000 miles instead of 10000 miles. These cars start burning oil early and you can keep the car in much better running condition by doing the oil changes early (instead of the other services early)

The owners manual will have that info. There are special conditions that the car would require 5000 miles oil changes. The special condition really is suppose to be the norm. The 10000 miles oil changes should really be the "special condition", not the 5000 miles change. Not many people will fit into this category of 10000 miles oil changes (no short trips, no idling in traffic, mainly highway driving without traffic, etc). @Mendel Leisk should be able to tell you more, he changes his oil every half year and a couple thousand miles (following Toyota recommendations)

 

your car is not due for anything major until 120,000 miles. the only extras we recommend here is tranny fluid change and egr cleaning, and now is a great time to do them.
you can get a maintenance schedule at toyota.com/owners if you don't have one.
do not take any dealer recommendations without asking here first. they are more interested in their bottom line than your cars health.
when you have time, look into egr circuit cleaning, and also whether your car has the updated pistons and rings. they changed by vin number some time in 2014 production.

also, it would be good to inspect the battery cooling fan and filter.

 

Love it. On one hand we have a statement that maintenance was done that wasn't recommended by Toyota yet. On the other, we have a statement saying that things should be done that Toyota doesn't recommend at all.

There is nothing wrong with changing the coolant at an earlier interval because time degrades it and not just relying on mileage.

Plenty of people claim that 10k is too long for oil changes and say to change it earlier. Why isn't coolant viewed similarly?

Coolant is a completely different fluid compared to an engine oil. Changing it early only can cause you problems if not done correctly. If the air is not taken out of the system correctly (and it's not that easy on a Prius), your car can overheat and you'll end up stranded and worst case needing a new engine. The manual for gen 2 Prius states to change is at 100k miles and then every 50k miles after that.

The oil changes are not set at 10k miles per oil change. There's certain criterias that allow you to go that long safely. Most people will fall into the more "severe driving" criteria where you have to change the oil every 5000 miles.

 

yes, the tranny fluid and egr asap, but no rush. it's always worth looking at the cooling fan and intake, just like the air and cabin filters

 

There's ususlly a time component to coolant as well. It's easy to bleed air on 2011+ cars.

I've done it twice now on my 2011 and it's cake compared to my GM truck.
