Anyone going to the 2015 Frankfurt/IAA auto show? Danny/Moderators?

Here's to hoping they actually reveal some core specs this go around.

Toyota's German website looks to update this throughout the coming days. Currently Prius section on map is greyed out:

I think we should ask the PriusChat membership to crowd-fund our trips to Frankfurt.

What do you all think? If everyone kicks in 10 - 20 dollars then I think we can do it.

It was my secret plan to go there, but my mate got in hospital. And i am not going alone. I was looking forward to your reactions on my own report (from "the dutch Priuschat division") of the IAA and the PRIUS.

Yeah. If only. To have gotten a "What Drives Us" or "PriusChat" press pass and shown up on Press Days. Man, that would be sweet. I'm getting press passes for the Chicago Auto Show. That's in February and all the information will be out by then but it'll still be fun.

Tomorrow Toyota has a pressconference at the IAA at 12.45-13.00h local time. Maybe then we will get the specs we are desperately waiting for.

You've got Tideland up in Canada. Maybe someday a local European PriusChat correspondent.

Well hopefully @parkerbol can give us some information from any Hybrid Life member that will attend the Frankfurt Auto Show.

I was informed the IAA press-release may lack the tech info we're looking for.
Probably Tokyo late October full disclosure?

Hmm interesting, that would be very disappointing actually. Wonder why Toyota even bothered to do a reveal if they were not ready with numbers. After all, numbers matter more for this car and without it, the reveal is meaningless.

It says "As a result, applied to the new Prius, this new hybrid system targets an 18 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the current car"

If this is right, that would be an outstanding achievement.

This comprehensive press release however means AWD is out, it is not mentioned anywhere.

That is a conservative target since the current Prius has not followed the Yaris and Auris hybrids in the fuel economy bumps of the recent years.

    Current fuel economy (NEDC):

    Yaris: 30.3km/l
    Auris: 28.7km/l
    Prius 25,6km/l

A 18% bump for the Prius will yield:
    25.6*1.18 = 30.2km/l

This puts the gen 4 on the current Yaris level (which uses the 1.5 Prius C drive train) and only 5.2% better than the current Auris which uses the current gen. 3 Prius drive train.

I think the Prius cannot be compared with the Yaris directly they are two different categories. Since the Yaris has the Gen2 1.5L engine, the claimed efficiency figures can be hard to get especially on motorway and in normal driving conditions.

I think the Prius Gen4 will do the claimed figures in real world driving especially as they have made a special note in the press release to say that Highway efficiency is significantly improved.

I also like the fact that they have covered a significant number of Gen3 weaknesses to highlight that Gen4 is improved on all those and that is a very good thing because it shows Toyota has been silently working to improve every aspect.

    Finally, some important specs/details released.

    Electric Motors?

Interesting details on “the new hybrid system” from the Toyota Press Release:

The new hybrid systems will come in a more compact package, that is lighter in weight and lower in cost. This new generation will reflect significant advances in battery, electric motor and gasoline engine technologies.

The batteries will offer higher energy density, which means more output from units of the same dimensions and weight.

The electric motors will be smaller in size, yet also provide a better power-to-weight ratio.

And the thermal efficiency of the gasoline engine – at 38.5 per cent already very high on the current Prius – is increased to more than 40 per cent – a world’s best for a gasoline unit.

As a result, applied to the new Prius, this new hybrid system targets an 18 per cent* improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the current car .

Yes, European cycle for fuel efficiency increase, but we are talking about a relative improvement on the same cycle, so it looks feasible to see an ~20% MPG U.S. EPA improvement.

The Auto Express story could account for going from one to greater than one electric motor:

The 1.8-litre petrol engine is set to remain with a downsized electric motor and a separate electric power unit to drive the rear wheels. This so-called ‘e-4WD’ system will only work at speeds of up to 37mph but will boost grip in poor weather conditions.

Correction: post edited to correct missing percent sign in above "~20% MPG U.S. EPA improvement."
