Did anyone else notice how much like (looks, manurisms, voice, attitude) the woman playing the presidents sister on this season of 24 is to Cynthia McKinney?

Did they go too far in portraying that stereotype in that role?

    Will there be outrage?

I think it's funny... just wondering if anyone else saw it?

I also think the Presidents advisor Karen "whatever" is way too similar to Karen Hughs.

Loved the beginning 4 hours so far. I think this is a real life scenario nightmare for us.

Interesting how the Presidents sister has to make a real life decision concerning reality(info concerning WMD's) and academics (strict interpretation of the law) - which does she choose? Real life must bite for lefties at times.

I mean I love the show, but it is yet again another beat down on Muslims. As a Muslim myself, it sometimes gets to be a bit to much. I really think they really could have used another approach. I really though this season was going to have to do with something involving the China, since they did kidnap him at the end of the last season. Every time these television shows portray Muslims as the bad guy, it just sets things back for us Muslims in being accepted by this modern world. I will say that by having the presidents sister, and that man Walid, saying loudly that "We have the right to respect our religion" is good.....but it only carries so much.

I really did not want to make my reply sound political, so really do not bash my post. It is just the little things I see from my perspective as a Muslim that bothers me. The same as a Asian, African, russian, whatever background would see as typical sterotypes that put thier background in a bad light.

I normally steer clear of Fred's place, but the subject piqued my interest; I watch 24 religiously (no pun intended).

The TV critic in our local paper had a review Sunday of the show's first two nights, and a little preview of what to expect in upcoming episodes. In particular:

"Perhaps as a response to criticism from Islamic groups two years ago, this season of "24" goes out of its way to create sympathetic characters within the American Muslim community."

Admittedly we didn't see much of that the last two nights, though there was a hint: Walid tipping off the authorities through Sandra about the conversation he overheard while being detained -- information that allowed CTU to conclude that more nuclear devices were in terrorists' possession on American soil. Maybe they will develop this character and this theme more fully.

? I'll have to assume that my total ignorance of the series is the reason that I don't get the tongue in cheek "manurisms" reference.

#7. When I've captured my adversary and he says, "Look, before you kill me, will you at least tell me what this is all about?" I'll say, "No." and shoot him. No, on second thought I'll shoot him then say "No."

***before anyone reads this... make sure you've seen all 4 hours***

It's been an awesome 4 hours so far... that's all i really have to say.

atually... i lied. Now i'm just confused... 24, Heroes, and weapons of the future... all on at the same time.. same day... sigh... i think i have to pick 24.. and just make someone tivo heroes.

they mentioned 4 more... with a total of 5 "bombs"

What i'm wondering is... who died in that... uh.. blast? wasn't the specialist still there? didn't he just finish arming it?

Also.. what's up with the presidents little "side kick" guy who always disagrees with him. I'm starting to hate that guy and wondering if he's a trader for some reason. He seems to have his agenda pretty pressed in his own direction.

My two favorite lines in the previous five seasons so far are:

    1. (Jack has just shot some totally valuable prize witness that CTU has guaranteed to protect at all costs. As everybody scrambles around in disbelief and dispair, Jack barks out:) I need a hack saw.
    2. The only reason you're still conscious is because I don't want to carry you.

Stephen King on the first four hours of 24

A friend of mine collected these from various places on the web. Sorts a 24 version of the Evil Overlord List:

When Google can't find something, it asks Jack Bauer for help.

You can lead a horse to water. Jack Bauer can make him drink.

When a Jedi senses a great disturbance in the Force, it is Jack Bauer.

Jack Bauer's family threw him a surprise birthday party when he was a child.
    Once.

When the Boogeyman goes to sleep, he checks his closet for Jack Bauer.

Jack found Waldo in one hour. The only reason he didn't find him sooner was
    because of daylight savings time.

If you wake up in the morning, it's because Jack Bauer spared your life.

    Superman wears Jack Bauer pajamas.

When Russell Crowe threw a phone at that guy, Jack Bauer was on the other side
    of the line.

As a child, Jack Bauer's first words were "There's no time!"

1.6 billion Chinese are angry with Jack Bauer. Sounds like a fair fight.

Jack Bauer played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won.

Jack Bauer can get McDonald's breakfast after 10:30.

    Jack Bauer makes onions cry.

If Jack and MacGyver were locked in a room together, Jack would make a bomb out of MacGyver and get out.

Every time the cops get an APB to arrest Jack Bauer, half the department mysteriously calls out sick. The fire department too, just in case.

Jack Bauer can hit two birds with no stones.

Jack Bauer knows what you did last summer.

When the doctor who delivered Jack Bauer saw that baby Jack wasn't crying, he
spanked him. Baby Jack then turned around and broke the doctor's neck. Jack
Bauer does not enjoy being spanked.

There once was a man from Nantucket. Jack Bauer shot him.

When Jack Bauer watches a pot, it boils immediately.

Guns don't kill people, Jack Bauer does.

If Jack Bauer was on Oceanic Flight 815, he'd have been off the Island with 23
hours & 59 minutes to spare.

Jack Bauer could get the ring to Mordor in 24 hours.

It's no use crying over spilt milk... unless that was Jack Bauer's milk. Oh, you are so screwed.

Oops, sorry Darell. It didn't occur to me that anyone would be watching it via a multi-day delay.

Yeah, that thought occurred to me too. But that's part of the show: The suspense and action will keep your attention so you forget (or ignore) the inconsistencies and improbabilities.

I LOVE 24. That being said there were several problems with the first four hours this year:

    1. I dont think there would be a President around that would have let go 110 top terrorists knowing that it would make absolutely no difference in stopping the terror attacks.

    2. They did not know one of the 110 bad guys was a nuclear programmer.

    3. The husband delivered the electronic component for the nuclear device.

I know its a TV show - I think they could have worked it a little better.

That being said - this might be the best season yet. Thank goodness for TiVo!

I wonder how the President will retaliate. What would you do in the same situation?

Yes. It also makes me feel uncomfortable. I am puertorican and I would feel the same way if there was a movie with evil puertoricans. An actual impossibility because no matter what choices to make, real puertoricans would choose the beach.

Anyway, I love 24 so I rationalize the issue by focusing on Nadia (not a hard thing to do, at all) and other good muslim characters. Remember the middle-eastern agent that got beat to death while helping Jack?

I think the evil portrayed in 24 is not islam the religion, or middle-eastern culture, I think its extremism. Even the president and neo-con-like characters have been (and are) bad guys! Maybe next time they can and should have a bunch of crazy evengelicals try to blow up a building. After all, it has happened...

    Cheers!
