Our 2015 Prius Four (just past the 36 months since original sale) has done just over 29K miles and is telling me that maintenance is required (not just "due soon," or whatever the previous alert was). Is there any way of telling what specific service is due NOW? I assume that the system stores individual items -- or does it just work on 5K intervals?

Looking at the list of required items, the messiest one looks like checking the transaxle fluid: removing a bunch of clips and bolts to remove a cover to gain access to the level/fill plug makes me wonder whether I might just as well drain and refill (or have the dealer drain and refill) while I am/he is about it.

How much should I expect to pay a dealer for the transxale drain and refill? How much for the whole set of 30K items?

check your o/m. tranny is not included, but a good idea. $100.-120. is a good price.

tire rotate, air and cabin filters, oil and filter, caliper pin inspect and lube, multi point inspection:

    dealer $790., decent mechanic $275., diy $100.

Is it worth going to the dealer for service while the car is still in warranty (for the powertrain) rather than just to an ordinary mechanic?

no that i know of. if i understand correctly, a mfg cannot refuse warranty because maintenance was not dealer performed.
best you can hope for is out of warranty assistance. they often give it to those whopped all their money to the dealer while under warranty.

I found instructions on line for lubing the caliper pins in conjunction with replacing the brake pads, but if all I need to do is lube the pins, do I still have to take the whole thing apart?

The maintenance reminder is a simple mileage counter. It does not track any maintenance items. Within 500 miles of the next reminder, it flashes briefly and says "maintenance due soon". When you reach the 5,000 reminder, it will stay on and say "maintence due now" or such.

Yes you do. Have you done disc brake work before?

    Never!
    Not once.
    FORTUNATELY!!

I did the brakes (front disc, rear drum) brakes on our Chrysler a few times. And I have taken note of the requirement to disconnect the 12V battery on the Prius.

What about maintenance I perform myself? I already have lubricant for the caliper pins (left from doing another vehicle), so I wouldn't have a receipt for the purchase. And what about simply *checking* the transaxle fluid and other items? I wouldn't have any proof that I had done it.

Post 9 is still applicable.....ESPECIALLY in MI (a car state, and coincidentally, Steve's home state!) :D

You don't have to disconnect the battery to replace the pads. Just keep the keyfob away from the car.
When I did mine I put both of them at the other end of the house. Over kill, but, better safe than sorry. :)

first of all, your car is almost 4 years old, so, most warranty is gone, some until 5 and hybrid battery until 8.

any maintenance you perform yourself is fine.

What lube is it? I ask because there's a few that swell rubber, have been problematic. Some of the pins (the rears if I recall correctly) have a rubber collar.

Toyota has a specific lube, and I've found Sil-Glyde Brake lubricant is fine. I use that for pins and boots, and Permatex Anti-Seize for points of contact between pads, shims, and caliper.

I wouldn't sweat the paper trail and receipts for DIY maintenance too much. Save all your receipts when practical, and DO keep a detailed log, with date, miles, and what was done.

One thing I found that helps: I buy my oil filter and drain bolt washer one at a time, as needed, through dealership I purchased the car from. I keep receipts like that in order, and note the actual oil change date/miles on the receipt. And mirror that info in my log (txt format). I used to buy oil just for the oil change too, but now am buying in bulk, from the dealership, bring my own bottle style.

Did you pay by credit card for the parts? If you did, you have a receipt.

A credit card receipt may say that I bought oil and a filter, let's say, but it doesn't show that I actually changed the oil and installed a new filter.

I don't think the onus is on you to irrefutably prove you've done maintenance. Just do it, keep what receipts you have, keep an organized log.

The car sat on the lot a long time when new, according to the CarFax record, so in fact it's only been in use about 38 months.

Yeah warranty starts from first date of purchase, does not include time sitting (new) on dealership lot.

(In our case that time on the lot was 15 months, lol.)
