My Prius is 5 days old, 250 miles on the ODO.

This morning, on the Consumption screen, I had two 5-minute periods that showed no bar. The first one showed one car icon for regen, but no bar. Then I had a bar of about 50, followed by another no-bar segment.

I was driving in heavy, stop-and-go traffic. The instantaneous bar showed anywhere from nothing to 100 and everything in between. Yet when the 5-minute bar should have appeared, nothing.

    Anyone ever experience this?

Yup...happens all the time in traffic. Usually while I'm creeping along Independence Avenue in the morning. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks. Scratch that worry off my list.

I've had that when I'm standing still for long stretches without shutting down. There's just a blank spot.

Thanks. I haven't had that happen yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time, and when it DOES happen, I won't worry about it.

I had just the opposite happen last week - in very slow traffic in Delaware, slow but moving, I had two 100 mpg bars in a row. It looked very cool. :)

That's why I asked the question. Yesterday, also in heavy traffic, I had a 100 mpg bar. I guess there was something different enough about the two situations that made the Prius react in different ways.

I had this happen to me the first time last week. I was wondering if I was getting over 100 mpg at that point and the poor computer said "I give up" :)

I used that just this past weekend... Stuck in Austin traffic on I-35 when I thought "Sheesh, I was stuck for 15 minutes!"

Good old Prius, keeping track of the traffic jam for me.

I think you can get an empty bar if your engine starts up, but you don't move far enough for the car to register. This to the car means you spent some gas but didn't move. I have not seen this happen in traffic for me.

The 100mpg bar is more common. This is when I use EV mode only for 5 minutes... Looks impressive on the bar but really kills your average gasmilage as it takes quite a bit of battery to start from standing still and doing it repeatedly.

However, it is very difficult to achieve the full mark for 30 minutes without regen icon. :)

Yes, it was a slight down hill and slow traffic reported by our friend.
Also, a man reported that he did same thing with CC at steady 38 mph driving.
And, I believe we can do that by ideal P&G technique when noone is behind you. :)

Yep...I have seen that several times. From what I have been told, there has to be some gas used in order to correctly calculate mpg. In my case, although some gas was used (I could hear the engine), apparently the software didnt pick it up because for one segment I got 0 mpg, but had travelled about 300 ft in 5 minutes (traffic!). Somehow I suspect that something better could be done in the software. But then again, I would rather have the mpg displayed versus distance travelled rather than time, and definitely not in block averages (blocks of 5 minutes duration) such as is currently displayed.
