My wife's 2007 Honda Accord 4-cylinder is coming up on a 50K mile oil change. I have always used the Honda recommended 5W20 dino oil since we have had the car. The Honda service department offered the synthetic oil but at a much higher price than the dino oil.

I change the oil myself now and would like to change to the 5W20 synthetic Mobil 1 oil but would like some feedback as to the pros and cons. I know Patrick Wong reported that one of his Prius' began burning oil after switching to synthetic from dino. This car has never burned a drop of oil to date and I would not like for it to start now.

What are the chances of this car burning oil if I switch to synthetic now? What are some other possible issues? Should I switch now or stay with the dino oil?

    Thanks for any feedback.

I switched my Ford Explorer from Dino (used by the previous owner) to Mobil 1 at 33k miles and I have never had any noticeable oil consumption. It now has over 125k.

I switched my GF's Ford V-10 powered motorhome from Dino to Mobil 1 at 19k miles and it does appear to burn a quart in 2k miles or so. It only has 26k miles at this point.

I think it just depends on the engine. As long as oil burning is not excessive, it really isn't all that big of a problem. I have had engines that burned Dino oil and still got high mileage from them.
