The free market will solve the problem. For example, I traded in my last Prius, a Prius Prime, for the 2019 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus in my driveway. I previously owned a 2003, 2010, and 2017 Prius. Toyota drove away a repeat customer. But I am not the only one: Tesla Reveals Most Common Trade in for Model 3

Tesla revealed the cars people are giving up in favor of its Model 3 sedan on Wednesday during the company's second quarter 2018 earnings call.

According to Tesla, the most commonly traded in models include the Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, and BMW 3 Series.

Even though Tesla sees the Model 3 as a rival for entry-level luxury sedans the most commonly traded in vehicles, apart from the 3 Series, are actually from mass-market brands.

Bob is quite correct. While I still have a P.P. for my wife to drive (and that I also borrow it on horrible freezing weather days), the writing is on the wall for Toyota, and has been for a dozen years, and large enough for Toyota to be able to read it. Every week of inaction on their part will not be solved in three weeks of overaction ten or more years from now if and when they wake up. The same goes for Honda and most every other Japanese auto maker. Perhaps Nissan will make it through OK, or get bought out?

EV, and I'm not going back to petrol (or hybrid, or PHEV).

    Agree completely

Thinking from a personal perspective, if I was smart or inventive enough to have my own company - good luck on outsiders telling me how to run it- My customers would be the ultimate people I needed to satisfy and the market would determine my success.

Especially in the Northeast. Your electric rates are outrageous.

Maybe Toyota should thank these companies for their input and concern and to further acknowledge and distinguish their commitment - they will now set up a site where each of these companies can make contributions to help the Toyota changeover to electric by actually making substantial monetary contributions to Toyota - thus putting their money where their mouth is and becoming an active solution to their perceived problem with Toyota.

Wouldn't that just end up like Toyota when insisted someone else pays for hydrogen infrastructure; an expensive car they couldn't sell to anyone.
They might be starting to notice. 10% of car sales in Japan are a foreign brand. Among EVs, it's 30%.

I'm thinking about upgrading my home EV charger with solar panels feeding an off-grid, battery storage.

The subject of this thread isn’t what the article says.
The request is for Toyota to phase out the internal combustion engine.

EVs are not mentioned, and if Toyota is correct about Hydrogen, that would work great.

The organizations simply want Toyota to help prevent the loss of millions of lives each year.

while toyota should have been investing more in battery plants, BEVs, and PHEVs, outside groups demanding this of a company is just wrong.

Toyota needs to shift fairly quickly which they can still do to avoid losing long term market share and profitability. EU-27 is certainly within their rights to ban new ice vehicles at a future date. But really this is not like activist saying don't buy goods from Iran or Russia.

Reading some of the ancillary linked articles showed that Toyota received a "fossil" award - by environmentalists. Kind of meant to be a double meaning? Fossils being the fuel and fossils running their anti EV stance ....
So today - 04/01/2023 - April Fool's Day - represents "out with the old & in with the new" corporate Toyota leadership. Hopefully this time it won't be a joke.

I read the letter twice and saw no mention of Toyota's groundbreaking Hybrid Prius/Hybrid Technology, no mention of Hydrogen research and actual hydrogen business, no mention of Toyota's commitment and compliance to ISO environmental standards, no mention of Toyota's consistent leadership and environmental achievements as an Automotive Environmental leader, no mention of Toyota's considerable monetary contributions to environmental groups....

"54 consumer and environmental groups representing millions of supporters in 26 countries have combined to ask that the new CEO, Mr. Sato, “commit to phase out all internal combustion engine vehicles in the U.S. and Europe by 2030, and globally by 2035.”"

never mind - now I get it, why didn't they add in whaling, war, exploitation of space, Capitalism, Socialism, Communism etc also

One of the (sub) articles links issues to small subcontractor companies for Toyota parts - & they are often working at excessively meager wages which of course lines leadership & stock owners' pockets. Reminds one of Apple once upon a time - they make a great /reliable phone - but it was at the expense of Chinese assembly line workers jumping out the window to their deaths in some instances - due to workload expectations & meager pay. Academia would tell us corporate governance principles should include community/ environmenral/ global/employee /worker impact. Then there's real world .....

Globally by 2035?!? Who’s gonna upgrade the infrastructure in developing countries? Or are they suggesting Toyota just stop selling to them? Because someone else will.

Wasn't China able to mandate a certain percentage of Toyota cars be electric or otherwise get out?

I was thinking more Central American and Africa but fair enough. (Although I think in parts of Africa, e-scooters and e-motorcycles are popular because battery swapping is much easier).

That also explains the UX300e, IZOA and CH-R EVs. And bZ3.
