since TOYOTA posted the TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ( EG018-06 ) permitting the use of lighter motor oils for 2006 TOYOTA / SCION vehicles and up ? If so , is the 5w-20 you're using a conventional or synthetic motor oil ? What manufacturer ? The gains ( m.p.g. , quieter engine ) ? Last, any downside ? THANKS

I'm still using 5W-20 Mobil 1 synthetic. Toyota hasn't officially approved 0W-20 for the Prius...but many feel it's quite safe and I agree.

TSB EG018-06 does not apply to Prius. See the note near the top of the front page that refers Prius owners to TSB EG050-04.

I've attached the April 2007 version of EG050-04. This document continues to recommend 5W-30 only.

Jay previously pointed out that other parts of the world allow use of lower viscosity oil. However if you plan to drive your Prius at freeway speeds through Death Valley (or Nevada, or Arizona) during the summer heat, this probably is not a good idea.

is there a similar T.S.B. ( EG050-04 ) for the 2007 , 2008 YARIS which uses the NZ engine ? The T.S.B. EG018-06 ( 06 stands for the year T.S.B. released ) states the o.k. for the use of the 5w-20 in the NZ series engine . We did get the EG018-06 bulletin sent via e-mail from the service center ( TOYOTA system ) where we got the car for warranty . THANKS

I have limited my TSB library to those documents related to Prius, so I do not know about the Yaris. However, since TSB EG018-06 says it is applicable to 2006-2007 model year Toyota/Scion vehicles (except Prius), and since the NZ engine series is listed for 5W-20, then it probably is safe to assume that TSB applies to the Yaris.
