My wife drives it around town for daily errands. Mostly under 15 miles round trip. Seems like her driving style/needs fit the PiP exactly. Now I'm stuck with the 2010 model... Yes, not a bad problem to have.

Exactly right. We fit that profile as well...and are closing in on 1000 miles with 3 bars still showing. While the long distance commuters do well with the PiP, those of us with frequent short trips do even better. Toyota may not like the image, but it's a great retirees car. Ironically, we tend to use the opposite procedure from everyone else: since we seldom use up the entire charge, we keep it on EV instead of switching to HV going up hills. On the occasional longer trips, it's difficult to remember to switch strategies!

  6. Have been experimenting just lately by putting car in neutral on descents or flats. The rolling ability of the car is incredible and while it does not charge the car does maintain the same charge, which is usually my aim. Looking at the 1 min bars still shows 100, or infinite. I also believe that today it actually did charge .1 mile in neutral, not sure I understand that!

You are far better off coasting in a prius by depressing the gas pedal just enough that the small bar in "charge" side on the left disappears but not so much that a bar appears in the "power" bar on the right. This way, if you need to accelerate in an emergency, you just go back down on the gas. Otherwise, you can get caught flat-footed in neutral without any options.

Which is why coasting in Neutral on a highway is a vehicle code violation in California. I have no idea how it could be enforced, especially in hybrids where the engine may well be off in normal operation.

and 60% of that was with gas, so 80 mpg when using gas! The EV mode is doing what it is supposed to - remove those poor mpg miles that the ICE would have needed to supply.

Are you assuming then you used 8.5 gallons over 681 miles?
Does it tell you how much gas you used in CD mode on the little as needed ICE operations?

Prius PHV tracks and reports HV and EV miles along with gallons and kWh consumed. The kWh does not include charging loss so simply adding 15% to it, gives pretty accurate figure "from the wall".

I will hit 800 miles tomorrow. Only 3 bars USED on the original tank! Does anyone have the record for the most miles driven on a tank of gas with the PIP?

I put gas in ours for the first time yesterday. It was at 967 miles, and had one bar left on the gas gauge. However, it only took 8.3 gallons (so ~117mpg, vs the dash readout 121). Approximately 60% of driving in EV, so we have room for improvement while running in HV if some of the people here are any indication. (This is our first hybrid, hence some learning-curve issues. And for the few weeks its future home was occupied by an old roadster, so my wife was disinclined to go to the effort to charge it.) Long and the short, I think we can do better & will make an effort for "best tank" status. Free gas for month to whoever achieves it? (Or a cup of coffee, probably similar expenditures...)

Publicly, I think the highest is PC member Plugable at 1688 miles, filled 7.87 gallons for a MPG of 214.5 (or MPGe of 99.6 if you factor in his/her electricity consumption). Second place goes to iRun26.2 at 1613.5 with 184.4 MPG and 96.4 MPGe.

You look to be on pace to be #1. Log your numbers in our spreadsheet to be forever immortalized

Almost had my car for 4 months.. I'm on my 3rd tank of gas.. but I'm at 1300+ so far.. unfortunately I dont think I'll make it to 1400 before I need to get gas though.

I had to do a real commute all week this week -- meaning significant HV driving. Sigh -- I have to go to the gas station for the first time tomorrow at about 1150 miles. Going to the garage now to locate the button that opens the door to the gas tank - I know it's somewhere near my left knee. The quiet of EV driving is almost as rewarding as the gas savings.
