    34k on my GenIII.

This AM my A/C began to intermittently switch cooling zones from head to feet and switch between fan speeds.

    It's like it was possessed.

    Any clues?

    Yeah, it's called Auto mode.

It switches around automatically. Want to stop it, then set it to manual. (y)

Another possibility: adjusting one thing (e.g. fan speed) will turn off the Auto light, but other parameters (such as mode) are still in Auto. Most likely it was alternating between heating and cooling - cooling is generally sent to the face, while heating is sent to the feet.
