If it can go more than 50,000 miles without major repairs it will be an improvement over all their other products

    Ummm.
Wasn't Toyota the first to turn the hybrid world on its head, or are you classifying them as the creator of the hybrid world?

i suppose you're right. but there wasn't much to turn, honda insight? but we have been clamoring for larger hybrids for a long time.

They can't even build a reliable ICE vehicle so better stay away from the hybrid market.

i agree, but with the minivan and now jeep, hopefully things will get better. wouldn't buy one, but if jeep drivers do, all the better. they break down a lot anyway.

Sad to see a Jeep going Hybrid. I suppose it would have happened sooner or later though. I do doubt it would be accepted by those of us who live out here where a Jeep still goes off road. But the suburbanites might bite on it. To what extent remains to be seen. The "Jeep People" love to jack up, accessorize and meet up in jamborees to do "Jeep Stuff".

Sign of the times though - still sad to see a Jeep going hybrid... it's as if it's an end to an era.

(Have had 5 jeeps since I was a kid - rompers)

My wife has owned two Jeeps in the past with very good experiences. I know she would probably like one again some day. I thought they were very crude and clunky, but guess that's their appeal. They are very capable off-road and in deep snow, which helps to make up for everything else they're not.

Although the Pruck wasn't a production vehicle, I would consider it the first hybrid pickup.

That depends on your definition of hybrid. I believe some propane delivery vehicles can be powered by either propane or gasoline, for instance.

There were diesel jeeps starting in the late 70’s , was that an end of an era?

    {editing this post, because - well I was being an nice person. 2nd day of not smoking-pretty grouchy}

But in a few better words than before. People have been swapping Diesels into Jeeps for awhile now. Why? Why not. More power, and it's cool.

    Those aren't hybrids.

For technical and regulatory definitions, hybrid refers to cars with two different propulsion systems. Most are ICE and electric, but it also covers ICE and hydraulic.

When the car has only one such system, but can use two different fuels, with separate tanks, then it is a bi-fuel car. PHEVs could be called bi-fuel since they have the ICE fuel tank and a battery charged from the grid.

2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) - Gas, Hybrid, Diesel, PHEV! | PriusChat

Turns out the hybrid will be a mild hybrid.

Honestly, the PHEV should appeal to those that use the Jeep for camping. Hopefully FCA is smart enough to put a converter in there so that people can run 120V appliances to increase the appeal of the PHEV. (i.e. it's not just for saving fuel but it's also a convenience item)

That said a hybrid Jeep could easily have more power than stock, and could even be a diesel hybrid,
    so why not?

Shade tree guys are getting 2000hp out of a 200lb BLDC motor, likely a tad better than that I6 gas thing everyone gets a boner over.

"Panic in Detroit" Sets Dragster 1/4 Mile Run Record - 7.24 @ 186mph - Video

No swap needed, Jeep did OEM diesels for the military in CJ5’s for economy and to be compatible with the militaries venerable JP5 so they didn’t need to carry mo’gas in the field.

Those antiques can be purchased off govliquidation amount other places.
