I have been watching the original Star Trek series via Netflix streaming video. I haven't watched the series since it first aired in the 1960s (yes, I'm that old). The quality is way better than I would have expected, even at 720 with all of the compression artifacts from streaming (I'm watching on a 52" 1080p DLP TV).

So here is my question: Has the original series been remastered or otherwise cleaned up for video release?

    Thanks,
    Tom

Yes. The new releases have been remastered. I also think some were even updated with newer special effects. Noting over the top just updated a little. You might not even notice them unless you seen the original and remastered side by side.

Here is 1 video I found comparing the two. Just search for Star Trek Remastered for more video comparisons.

Yes, at least according to a trekkie at work. The Canadian Sci Fi channel, Space, aired the "new and improved" original episodes around a month ago

Nothing too fancy, just made the special effects a wee bit less dated

If I recall, George Lucas did the same thing when the original 3 Star Wars were remastered and released as a "directors cut"

A very obvious example of this was George Lucas's THX-1138. Although I liked the original, I also like the "new and improved" version too

I watched the original series on the CBS website, before they released the remastered versions. All the lousy backdrops, strings, and cheesy FX was very visible.

    I loved it.

While I'll probably end up with the remastered set, a part of me will mourn the passing of the original.

Well, this certainly explains a lot. I recall the effects being very cheesy. I loved the show, but they didn't have much of a budget for sets and effects.

Watching the show now, I thought "Hmmm, I wonder why I thought this was so cheesy? It's a bit dated, but pretty good considering when it was made." On the plus side, the updates fit in seamlessly. They have done a good job.

Perhaps other Trekkers can correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard a story that the teleporter was "invented" as a last-minute necessity.

The story I heard was that near the end of teh shooting schedule for the first episode, they realized that the crew needed to get from the Enterprise to the planet's surface but no one bothered to figure out how. There wasn't enough money or time to build a shuttle craft and someone said, "we'll beam them down!"

It was the Sixties. I can only guess how they thought up of "beaming"

That's the story I heard too. I don't know if it's true, but it seems plausible.

    Same here.

The concept of teleportation had been in science fiction literature for some time by the time they did the original Star Trek. The movie "The Fly" (1958) was about a teleportation that went wrong. But it was much older than that. Here's a short history: teleportation

You know, i've never seen the 1958 version... but the 1986 version with Jeff Goldblum was just plain creepy.

I was a serious fan of Star Trek when it came out in the sixties. I was part of the letter writing campaign that saved it for an extra season. I received this photo as a result (note that the yellowing is from a bad scan, not the photo):

One of my favorite ST stories is about the 'automatic' doors.

They were operated by two stage hands that made "swooshing" sounds while moving them. Occasionally, you'll see in an episode when the timing was a little off.

    Great photo, qbee!

My ST costume should be that of a tribble.

    I'd make a cute tribble! ;)
