    Hi everybody,

A good friend of mine has tried a variety of diets - there are too many to count.

If you take what some nutritionists say to heart, I'm afraid were are all doomed lab rats eating one form of FrankenFoods or another. While backing off of processed foods is a good idea, I still think the fresh foods overall are still healthy inspite of things.

    My thoughts:
    • Eat and exercise moderately until you are at your ideal body weight/body mass
    • Don't intake a lot of sugar, salt, meat, processed foods
    • Get regular checkups
    • Be vigilant on any health changes
    • Stay educated.

    I agree 100%.

Awhile ago I watched Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.

    Inspiring movie.

Got the Breville Juicer and did the vegan diet for 1 week.

Lost 10 LBS and felt great.

I'm not heavy but wanted to try it.

Eating good food with taste and texture is a pleasure and drinking veggie juice is well a particial deprivation.

However having a small fresh carrot, apple and cucumber juices as a snack is a healthy choice.

The ticket is walk about 3 miles or more every morning and avoid sandwiches like this one as much as you can.

Just saying I only do the long walks about 2-3 times a week

I've gone through cycles in my life.
I know when I'm doing well.
I also know when I'm not.

And basically the OP has it right. There are no shortcuts.

I have a friend and his wife that go from gimmick to gimmick. From Atkins diet to sprinkling Chia Seeds on food..to whatever...and it never works.

My opinion is you want to lose weight? Take in less calories than you are burning.

Simply "think" about what you are eating. It really doesn't take a nutritional expert.

I've been on both sides of this coin. And I tend to be All or Nothing. Either I am exercising and eating well, or I'm not exercising and I'm eating horrible. And I'm NOT surprised by the results of either approach.

But I don't buy into gimmicks, trends or the latest fad diet.

Want to be healthier? Eat better and exercise more.

The sad part though is that once you get to a certain point, you can no longer function properly for the exercise required or with the fatigue of starvation.

When you get too large, you get back pain, leg pain, immobility, heart problems, all those nasty things. Exercise and diet would of course help, but if you can't stand upright for 2 minutes, how are you going to run for an hour? Sometimes after you hit the tipping point, something more drastic is needed to kickstart the process and get you below that critical apex where you can start doing it on your own.

Speaking from experience here where I lost half my body mass.

    No. Roux-en-Y.

It is not a cure all and it is not for everyone. 4 years later I am running 3+ times a week now, go swimming, hiking, bike to work sometimes, that sort of thing. For me, it helped tremendously.

And it is not something a reputable doctor (or any insurance company) will approve unless it is a last ditch effort. There was almost a year of dietary logging, physician recorded diets, and psychological evaluations before the approval was given.

Chris Powell saves lives one at a time. Excellent TV show. Simple formula, diet, exercise and psychology. Plenty of support. Skin removal operation.

The fountain of youth is diet and exercise.

Good genes help, too, but there's not much you can do about that part.

I only want to add one exercise tidbit.

Common (mis)perception: Exercise = Gym workout
Better perception: Exercise = Daily Walk of a couple miles

Walking is perhaps the best exercise you an do. Start it immediately. Build up your distance over time. Try and get that 3 miles under your belt. Reward yourself by participating in 5K which is about 3.2 miles. Get a walking buddy. If your young start jogging. Build up to the 5 K than the half marathon. Concentrate on distance and not speed.

Many call this weight bearing exercise the best you can do.

You will shed the pounds and you will feel great if you incorporate diet.

i heard about a study the other day, obese women who had one or more children, and were going to have more, had some type of weight loss surgery. the children they had after the surgery were slimmer than the ones before.

Any exercise you will actually do is the best. For me it is cycling since I usually want to get somewhere in a timely fashion.
