5 years seems really optimistic. But hopefully will happen in that time frame. High voltage automotive battery technology has been frustratingly slow. I look back to the battery consortium days of the 90's and sometimes marvel at both how far we have come (actual technology in cars) and how far we have to go (size, complexity, cost).

I'd say first that battery tech is moving along at a good pace, but these hype pieces make it seem as if it should be moving faster. Look at a mac book air versus the first lap tops and you will see huge increases in battery life and decreases in size. Cell phones have made similar increases. Today's battery consumer electronics battery tech is close to complete for PHEVs, but has a few decades to go for BEVs that are affordable with range.

I don't put to much stock in solid state battery promises. Lithium chemistries have a good way to go in improving and I would expect them to be king for at least the next couple of decades.

Maybe not with 600 miles but they can easily have a smaller, cheaper, 200 mile battery with a 1.0 litre engine.

...buy Toyota stock, if true...had a tiny bit at $130/share thankfully sold before too much loss.
