I've seen the other poll on what type of actual (calculated) MPG Gen III owners are getting but obviously those of you who live in a flat area are going to get different results than those of us who live in more hilly areas. (As you can see in my sig my average MPG is not that great compared to what others are reporting.) This poll is therefore designed to get a general sense of how much of a factor terrain plays in the type of fuel economy Gen III owners can expect.

Obviously "hilly" means different things to different people but let's just say that if you can climb it without going into the PWR zone then it's not a hill.

I've made it a multiple choice poll so that those of you who have driven in different locales can give an answer for each. It's also public, to encourage honesty and facilitate discussion. Finally, please indicate your average MPG rather than your best tank.

Since I drive in mostly hilly, I didn't really know how to response to the "other types" of terrain. You and I seem to be the only responders so far. How hilly are your hills? Short hills don't bother my mpg much, but some of my upgrades are several miles long.

Might want to consider adding categories that combine terrain and traffic (heavy, medium, light). I'd do way better on hills if someone wasn't behind me rushing me up them. I've had people pass me on the shoulder, ride my bumper, etc.

Don't check any of them. (I've updated my original post to make it less confusing.)

That would put the poll at 72 questions (the max is 25) and get way too confusing! Just go with an average.

    Yep, I didn't.

You're right on the complexity, of course. The problem will be that there are MANY interrelated factors affecting our mpg, not just the one additional factor I suggested.

And one guy able to drive downhill bothways (!) will frustrate the heck out of us...

On my 40th birthday someone told me it's all downhill from here.
    Does that disqualify me?

Oops, sorry, I just noticed this thread is in the Gen III forum.
I guess I really am getting too old.

Thanks, I thought so, but actual can be a very cofusing word:

    ac⋅tu⋅al[IMG] /ˈæk[IMG]tʃu[IMG]əl/
1.existing in act or fact; real: an actual case of heroism; actual expenses. 2.existing now; present; current: The ship's actual position is 22 miles due east of Miami. 3.Obsolete. pertaining to or involving acts or action.

It would be better to just say calculated instead.

Also, just average MPG is too vague... is that lifetime MPG? Tank MPG? Best trips average MPG?

You must be either an attorney or a politician! The whole point of this poll is to find out what average calculated MPG people get in different types of terrain. Therefore it's asking what your lifetime average MPG for a given terrain type is. (Let me know if I need to define what the meaning of 'is' is.)

Still not a ton of data, but what there is points to a 5 MPG drop for those driving in mostly hilly terrain vs. those driving in mostly flat terrain (and possibly another 5 MPG drop for those driving in more mountainous terrain). Which obviously makes sense and points out the importance of indicating what type of terrain you're driving in when you post MPG results. (I've used "terrain" so many times in this thread it's starting to sound weird.)

That makes sense since my first calculated tank was only 46: the second one was worse: 42 mpg. I live in East Tn where all the roads are at least hilly to mountainous. I can't think of any straight or level ones. The one upside is that if you follow the same route back; some of those roads will offer some woderful coasting back down; usually though it's just up and down all the way. I guess my mileage will never exceed 46 mpg???

Feel a lot happier and more reassured after reading this poll and it's results.
