I bought rotors from Canadian tire....I got them on and heard grinding noises. It got cold so I left things till this morning. I thought the worst - abs issues or something more serious. I measured the roots today and they are 25.3 mm. New ones from Toyota are 22.3 (+/- .3 my vernier caliper doesn't like the cold either)....which I went and got today. ...now everything seems fine. Frustrating though, when rotors aren't the specs that they claim to be. 1542049271656.jpg

. Toyota rotor on the left.

Or on the right if the photo is upside down....

Is that a groove in the surface on the outer circumference of the disc? Wonder what that is for?

Yes, not sure why it's upside down....anyway, the Toyota one is darker.

I would just take them to any parts store and gave them cut down to the correct size.

Just out of curiousity, what was the thickness of the old ones?

The ones I took off- I'm not sure. I still have them, but don't have the proper caliper to measure them with. The edge has a fair amount of rust. I will rig something up and see what I get. There were likely below 20 mm, but not by much.

Do you know what brand rotor the too-large ones are? It might help others in the future in purchasing rotors.

"Certified" sold at Canadian tire and a few other stores in Ontario.

    I've seen mislabeled/misboxed rotors before.
Very annoying when I have a customer waiting.

The part code matched between the box and what was stamped on the rotor....so it wasn't mislabeled. The lady at the Toyota parts department at my local dealer said she ran into this before when she worked at an aftermarket parts place. Apparently with some places you can specify 25 mm or 22 mm root thickness...first time I've heard of this though.

Do you mind sharing the part code? It might help to ID the manufacturer of the part that is problematic.

I took them back already...and don't have the box. It was 31377 I think....

Oddly enough, the old ones were 21.7 mm @ 210 000 km. They were changed due to rust.

That 31377 disc is on Rock Auto as the first of seven listed under "economy" model and is the cheapest of them all at $11 each.

I have always bought and have had great success with the "daily driver" model of Centric brand from Rock Auto. The Gen 2 discs are $27 each. I've never been fond of purchasing the "cheapest" brake part possible for a car I drive every day. Kinda like using Mobil 1 synthetic oil instead of BillyJoeJimBob's nograde dino juice from the local dollar store. I do not know....maybe reliable brakes are overrated....

I'm trying to "sit on my hands" on this, but: maybe they were still usable? If the rust was building up along the outer edge it could maybe just be chamfered off? Thickness was still plenty, almost new.

Water under the bridge now, just saying.

Yeah I saw that but wasn't entirely sure it was the exact part - it's listed as "DURAGO BR31377 {#126226}"
