After years of driving my 2013, I just noticed the recessed area in front of the speedometer panel

    i think the speedo is a projector/mirror or the like

    @bisco is correct. Put your fingers over it and watch your speedo get replaced by a silhouette of your fingers.

    Yes. If that recess is covered by a sheet of paper, much of the display vanishes.

    I thought the mystery was going to be why the Prius has a projected, mirrored combo meter display, when everybody else just sticks a regular display on the dash where you can see it, and calls it a day.
