I noticed that Toyota sells an alarm system for the Prius as an accessory. First, I didn't realize that my 2013 Prius 2 didn't have one. Second, is this worth installing or should I go for an aftermarket one? The Toyota one is about $350 not including installation. I'm not sure how hard it is to install myself.

What functions does the alarm have? I would think the car's immobilizer would be good enough. Nobody would steal a prius

The horns would sound if someone breaks in. Someone might want to steal items in the car.

I can understand that however most people ignore car alarms.

In all the posts so far, it's the result of leaving stuff in the car. Translation: Don't leave valuables in the car.

Not always. On my pickup I've had wheels and catalytic converter stolen. Batteries have been stolen out of a Prius. They might break on to steal what you may or may not have in the glove compartment.

Unless you live in a high crime area, it's best to consider the statistics specific to each model. Pickups as a group are more frequently stolen. Of all the posts on MR (to the best of my knowledge), only one had the $900 radar compatible front emblem stolen and the rest involved valuables left in the cars.
