Well on my way to work today I started out at about %10 fuel according to my Can-View. I'm nearing 600 miles on this tank at 61.4mpg average. Yeah I'm pushing it. 4 miles into this trip I check my fuel and its at %4. One mile later its at %2. One mile later its at %0 and I still had about 5 miles to go!

Normally when I have %10 left according to the Can-View I can go about 20-30 more miles and I still have about %5 left. I guess this shows that you really cant trust the Can-View either.

There is a Shell station about a mile away and I have about a %55 SOC.

Anyone want to place bets on if I will make it to a gas station?

Place a bet on how much fuel I will put in?

Geeze, just get some gas all ready.

I don't like to play that game, I don't need the stress.

I swear, Force.
The things we do for fun, huh?

My guess goes like this:
- if the station is downhill the majority of the way, you're golden.
- if the station is on level ground from where you are, you have a chance.
- if the station is uphill the majority of the way, make sure you're wearing comfortable shoes.

However, as you said, you can't really trust the CanView. So in reality, you might actually have more than 0% fuel.

Let us know how it turns out.

All the while as you delay your fill up, gas is going up by about 5 cents an hour. :)

Haven't you heard? 5:00 this evening is "Don't Buy Gas This Hour" to protest gas prices.

Not on the bet, but 55% should get you half way there (if level). I don't think anything of about fuel measurements on the Prius can be trusted. I've seen CAN-View readings drop from 75% to 72% and then back up to 75%. Those are made up numbers, as I don't recall accurately. I don't know whether it has to do with acceleration, incline, or whatever. I'm guessing CAN-View is using the same information that the guess gauge does. It's just that it gives finer readings than the guess gauge. For that matter, I have seen rare occasions where a pip disappears and then comes back.

Let's see. Your post was at 5:28 a.m., and you haven't made an additional post. Does that mean you're waiting until the afternoon/evening to get the gas, or did you have to walk more than a mile or two?

They look good on the car. Posts these days get off topic quick don't they?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TonyPSchaefer @ May 16 2007, 09:43 AM) </div>
Not really for fun. I just did not expect it to get that low that quick even though I was pushing the miles out of it.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(daronspicher @ May 16 2007, 10:43 AM) </div>
And it will still only cost me $25 for another 600 miles. :D

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Stev0 @ May 16 2007, 10:49 AM) </div>
Yeah. I'll just stop there to get slushy and a snickers. I can make it home with the fuel thats in the fuel lines.

I have to wait until I get off work before I can fill up. That will be at 4:30EST

ICE warmup is what will kill ya. That thing sucks fuel like a truck for the first minute and runs down the pack to boot.

I say you get there without a hitch and can't get more than 8.5 gallons in the tank no matter how many times you perform the magic nozzle inversion incantation.

*or*

The engine actually shut down right before it sucked its last milliliter this morning, so you'll get out there at 4:30 and find that it won't start.

It has to be one extreme or the other. I won't accept any of that dramatic coasting up to the gas pump on battery power stuff!

See Norm's web site http://www.hybridinterfaces.ca/index.html

Among other things, it provides remaining fuel in % of tank.

Apparently, this is the last month to order one (unless you plan on doing a PHEV conversion). He's going to stop making them. It's been too expensive of a hobby for him.

The results are in!

The Shell gas station was closed that was about 1 mile away because they were changing their name! !!! !!! So I decided to push my luck ad try the Shell station another 2 miles away. I arrived with 608.2 miles at 61.5mpg average. I filled the tank until the first click at 10.279 gallons. Price $3.299/G for a total of $33.91. This is more than I wanted to pay because this is city gas and I can get it about $0.15 cheaper 5 miles down the road at the Chevron station I always fill up at. Oh well.

some more stats...

According to the Can-View I traveled 7 miles on 0%

15 miles from ~%10 - %0 and still had some gas left.

plus it was very very windy. and yes I had a head wind.

If you used the Shell MasterCard (5% rebate) it would still be marginally cheaper than Chevron's price.
