Am I the only one dismayed about the design of the car charging door?

    Am I the only one dismayed about the design of the car charging door?

    I live in the northeast, and my car is out in the elements because I don't have a garage.

    It makes no sense to me why the charging port door opens to the side vs flips up to shelter it a bit from the water based elements (snow/rain) ....

    What do others do to keep it from being exposed to water and snow???

    It just seems like it would be wise to try to minimize the exposure of the electronic charging port to water and snow...

    Have you ever seen a fuel door that flips up? The majority of fuel doors open to the side.

    You may have to fight against gravity on this one. lol

    you are not the only one, but the others have already learned here that the charging port is not susceptible to water, snow ice, what have you.
    yes, it gets in there, but no, it doesn't affect anything. it was designed that way.

    you can charge outdoors in any weather, no worries.(y)

    This might be an opportunity for someone to design a practical charging door for any vehicle. Just because a fuel door opens to the side, doesn’t mean a charging door has to.

    I think it’s the part where you’re charging outdoors and it snows (the wet sticky snow) and piles up around the port.

    They are different beasts, gas filler caps and charging ports.The lid over the gas cap is flipped open for a minute or two, typically under some sort of cover at most gas stations, and there's no electricity involved. Charging port on the other hand is exposed for hours, does involve electricity.

    Sure why not: a lid that flipped up and provided some shelter sounds like a good idea.

    i guess if you've never owned one, it doesn't make sense.

    but many of us have been charging for 6 years in all kinds of weather, including heavy wet snow. the prime is a bit different from the pip, but i haven't seen any mention of issues, just newbie questions as above.

    Wouldn't it be wise if it was at the front so I don't have to back up every time I need a charge?

    But I back in every time which means I’ll have to drive in every time I need to charge ;).

    But part of it is weight savings. You don’t have to run the cable from the port in the front of the car to the rear where the converter is. Right now, the cable just runs to under the rear seat from the charging port to the converter then onto the battery.

    If you back in to charge, you can drive out forward when you leave. Usually, you’re going to need to backup at the beginning or at the end, or the reverse.

    I was worried about charging outdoor in elements first, but after a winter long daily charging I no longer worry about it. Like @bisco said, snow and rain are not problem, only time I experienced some difficulty was when we had freezing rain and/or wet snow that refreezed quickly. With ice forming in and around the hinge it became difficult to close the door. I think no matter what design any open door with charging cord sticking out would become difficult to operate for those climate.

    That's true. I feel that's its easier to pull into a garage rather than to back in. It takes me longer to back in. I don't have a problem with charging since my L2 cord is 25 foot long. It's mounted on the front left of the garage. My car is parked on the left side. My wife's BEV Focus is parked on the right side. We don't need to back in to charge our cars. I actually don't like the charging port on the front since a lot of collisions are frontal so you may not be able to charge your car if you get into a minor accident.

    if the lid flipped up how would you see to plug it in? Not all of us are under 3' tall

    The same way I do for the outside outlets that have the cover that flips up! ;) Since I also unplug that side of the charging cable too (rather than waste phantom energy by keeping it plugged into the outlet when it's not charging up the Prime.)

    stop for a minute and think of all the negative comments EVERY reviewer in the world would give Toyota for a door that flipped up so that you couldn't see the outlet and you would have to plug it in blind.

    I did stop to think about it. I still think it's a poor design for people who don't have any place out of the elements to store their vehicle. I still feel that a better design would be one that flips up - just like the power receptacle that I plug the other end into is designed (and which also sits lower than the charging port on the car is located.) It doesn't take that much effort to look under it. But we are all welcome to our opinion. :)

    they could use a clear cover like some of the exterior receptacles. but again, why do you want to reinvent something that works fine?
