The new, redesigned RAV4 (2026 model year), America’s best selling car by far, is about to be released as early as tomorrow or the next few days. It opens an entirely new era for Toyota with the new Arene platform and TSS 4.0 with over-the-air (OTA) updates to the car’s automatic driving and electronic systems.

I’m about to drive the new Toyota RAV4. What do you want to know?—The Autopian

I thought the Ford F-150 was the best selling car. On the other hand, I never call crossovers or pickups cars, but that's just me.

I'm glad they keep getting better at safety. Does the automatic driving count as a safety feature?

Cool. Now how about a Camry PHEV?

The Rav4 is #3 behind the Ford f150 and Chevy Silverado.
Toyota's CUV is down 4% in sales this year AND even though less than 5% of them were sold in the PHEV flavor - Yota is making noises about electrifying them all - which will probably leave the Honda CRV as the #3 best selling car in America.
    YOTA sold 239,451 Rav4s.
Less than 5% of them were PHEVs.

To me car covers all personal vehicles used to move people around. Depending on the subject of the conversation, that can include trucks. For 'best of' discussions, these follow more defined terms. The Rav4 is a small SUV according to Toyota, which makes it a truck. It gets murky with crossovers. Some are SUVs while others are station wagons, thus cars. Depends on where they'll to the manufacturer the most good for CAFE.
Toyota lumps hybrid in when talking electric. The current Rav has an ICE option. This is just saying it will be hybrid only like the Camry is now.

You are correct about being #3 behind the Silverado and F150. But, according to the latest US sales rate Toyota sold 358,134 RAV4s through 3 quarters of this year, represents a 2.7 DSR% increase of same period 2024.

Yep. I dislike the idea of software defined vehicles. But if they can do it right i wouldn't mind. I just see zero reasons why any car manufacturer will do it right. The same for all "smart" or software defined appliances.

The main issue I see is the blatant push for planned obsolescence of main selling features as well as the obvious security risks once the car reaches a certain age.

    Me too.
If a family of four buys a pickup truck and uses it for people transport - it's a car to me.
It's a car, built on a unibody frame, with a car drive-train (sideways engine, mostly FWD...etc...etc)
    Basically?
A Camry with bigger tires and a slightly different body.
If it were a truck that got transmorgified into a car-like vehicle but still sitting on a truck frame, with a truck drivetrain and no bed - THEN it would be an SUV.

We even have vehicles with truck beds sitting on car unit-bodies with a fwd drivetrain that call themselves 'trucks.'

So.....it's easier for ME to think of them all as cars.

I wanted to buy a small truck, like we had before they were eliminated by CAFE - so then I looked into a Tacoma - NOT available for under $40,000.
THEN I looked into the Colorado/Canyon sized vehicles but those models seemed to have the infotainment system controlling the HVAC system - which is a HARD PASS for me.
I live on the Redneck Riviera....pretty close to the Gulf - which means that the HVAC system is pretty important when it's foggy or humid.

Besides.....the ONE mid-sized unit could not be sold because at the time (2023) there was a parts shortage and the infotainment system was hard-down with a defect......which is how I found out about the HVAC interface.

    Nope.
    Not me!

C&D said they were down 4% and I'm not enough of a Toyota fanboy to fact check them - I'm also not enough of a hater to say that the "BY FAR" statement is slightly inflated.
I'm not exactly a Honda fan but also didn't fact check the fact that CRV sales are up this year and if they resist the excesses of Toyota's changes in 2026 that gap may narrow quickly or disappear altogether.
NOT in the CUV market - or ANY market for the time being.....

Software defined vehicles means more control by third party entities (think government, corporations). You'll need to contend with software lock-outs and inability to do simple diagnostics. Your ability to wrench on a car will be limited. Parts replacement my depend on hand-shaking rules; meaning you'll have to go to a dealership to unlock the current software to accept the new part into the system. There will be a time when your NOT really buying anything but leasing it - because they can turn it OFF at anytime. It's already happening. BMW's failed attempt to charge you monthly to keep your heated seats operating. There's a price to be paid for conveniences and real freedom is that price. IMHO

    No thank you......

I recall a car I had in 1999 that you could maintain if you bought the repair manuals (7 binders) and a subscription for updates. The OBD codes were 10 pages long just to list. And a simple code reader could only read half of them. Took years before someone came out with a code reader that could read 98% of the codes. The manuals alone cost 25% of the car's list price.

Buddy threw a rod on the top of the Chesapeake Bay bridge, coasted to the bottom, found a junk yard and replaced the engine in an hour or so and went on to the beach. I think he said $25 swap cost. The simplicity of a Model A. Was it the 70s that things started changing?

Today's Toyota you get a subscription for a weekend and you have the diagnostics and manuals on your screen. You still have to wrench. Right to Repair.

Had what others thought "Best" paid part of the purchase and operational cost, I would have let them buy it for me. But it was my money and I bought what I wanted … the lowest costs to operate.

That is why after Prius, I have two EVs. One to drive while the other charges during the daylight from my solar roof.

    Never even heard of it. But considering THIS is our utility vehicle;
    IMG_20250228_163134.jpg
Doubt any available Honda will be able to pull our 5th wheel anyway - much less available toyo offerings.

We are considering the plug-in Ramcharger tho, turning on weather or not it's cargo capacity is sufficient.

Probably not a current Montana picture either.
