VIDEO UPDATE: So here is what it looks like when tipping the Prius, when changing its oil. All four tires were on the ground and the oil was already dripping for maybe 15 minutes. In fact, I am now is keeping it open while I rotate the tires so that it can drip from all four angles.

    Original Post:
When i changed my prius's oil, i tried tipping the left side and a good amount of oil came out...

that extra oil would have been hanging around if i hadnt done that...

of course, when i did this, all four tires were on the ground. i wasnt on any stands or anything... i just readjusted the oil pan and then raised the left side of the car with the jack...

    anyone else try this?

I jack my car all the way back to the ground during the oil change to get some extra out but never thought of jacking up the other side.

    Sounds like a good idea.

I like to pick it up and shake it a couple of times to get those last few drops out.:)

Yes, I raise the driver's side which not only tips the car
slightly but also raises the entire front end a bit and makes
it much easier to get under there.

How much extra oil do you think it gets out? I bet its not more then 100 ml.

Does the 2010 have a similar "problem". I wonder why they would design the gen II like that.

I think you answered your own question. I agree that the amount is probably around 100 mL.

3.9 US quarts rated capacity = 3.69 liters or 3690 mL.

    100 / 3690 = 2.7%, not enough to worry about.

I pour the clean 1/2 quart I'm not gonna use thru the system with the plug out, it get's plenty dirty on it's way thru...

one could always turn the motor over a few times to make sure all the oil is out

while 2.7% might be liquid it sounds like from ursle's method a large portion of that 2.7% is also dirt which would make it more valuable to get rid of for overall engine health.

however the question is: Is getting rid of that dirt worth wasting half a quart of motor oil?

I wonder if a less expensive liquid might do the job just as well...

Have you tried an oil extraction pump? I've heard the recovery rates are at least as good, if not better, and it sounds like a much easier and cleaner way to change the oil. And if you've got the oil up to temperature before removing it, there shouldn't be any sludge, because all that crap will be suspended in the oil.

Yes, and I was looking for the poll to vote, don't see that option. Just to be perfectly clear why this is a good idea, I also wanted to add a point about the oil pan itself (at least in my 04, am looking for pic's ) , it's made with a crease in the mid part that will retain oil if the car is level during the drain .
Letting it set overnight to drain also helps a bit.

This picture link somewhat shows the crease.

Isn't that a lot of work, undoing the engine mounts and all, just to get a few drops of oil out? Or do you turn the rest of the car over too?

I just pull the plug out when the engine is hot and let it drain for 10 minutes then put the plug back in. It isn't rocket science.

Last time when I was draining oil, after the oil stream became drips, I raised the driver side a little bit. I got a very thin stream of oil flowing out which then soon became drips again, didn't seem much at all. Maybe I didn't raise the side high enough. Fill volume was about (3 + 20/32) = 3.6 quarts.

Maybe I share the same OCD tendencies as the OP. When I recently did the oil change I was under the car looking at that drain location and thinking that there must be more old oil waiting in there. I considered lifting the driver's side but didn't bother. Maybe next time I'll give it a try. Since I was using ramps I could just add a 2x6 or something under the left side ramp.

LOL, I thought of that too but figured it might be a bit too extreme. No harm in trying tho!

Please don't do that. For safety sake use the ramps as they were intended. It seriously isn't worth the trouble.
